At last, the violent rallies against the U.S. embassy in Cairo and Egypt’s laxidasical efforts to defend American assets, have yielded a real result.

President Morsi is continuing the evolution toward an Egyptian definition of Egyptian interests that began with the decline of Hosni Mubarak and that promises to hasten the decline of American influence.

Egypt, the Arab world’s most important single country, has been turned from an ally of America—albeit an imperfect one of course—in maintaining and trying to extend Arab-Israeli peace into a leading advocate of expanding the conflict and even potentially going to war.

The U.S. is being made to look weak in Egypt, and is actually acting weak with allies and foes alike.

According to the Egyptian newspaper, Al-Masry Al-Youm, due to negotiations between Egypt and jihadists groups, "Operation Eagle" has been halted, at least temporarily.

Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi told Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh on Sunday that "Egypt and Palestine are one entity." Morsi, calling to convey holiday greetings in honor of Eid al-Fitr, also told Haniyeh that Egypt will stand by the Palestinians, and stressed the importance of security cooperation between the two countries.

Mohamed Gadallah, legal adviser to President Mohamed Morsi, told Egyptian daily Al-Masri Al-Youm that the amendment being considered would seek to reintroduce full Egyptian sovereignty and control over the Sinai peninsula.

If there were an Olympics for lying, the winner of this year's gold medal for prevarication would be Egypt’s president, Mohammed Morsi. Of course heads of state lie, but rarely do they display it with such chutzpah. The recent sleight-of-hand involving a president-to-president exchange would shock even cynics.

Egyptian president Morsi made several sweeping decisions on Sunday afternoon, announced by the presidential spokesperson in a televised statement. Al Ahram reported that, to start, Morsi cancelled the addendum to the constitutional declaration, issued by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) on June 17. The addendum stipulated that the head of the SCAF, Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, was to remain minister of defense until a new constitution was drafted. Not any more.

Wouldn't it be logical to expect that before issuing an invitation to Morsi to visit him at the White House, President Obama would ask his future guest how, if he believes that the country must be subjected to Islamic Law, he intends to defend the secular constitution of Egypt?

President Barack Obama has invited his newly elected Egyptian counterpart Mohamed Morsi to visit the US for an official visit in September. Deputy Secretary of State William Perez said he delivered this message during his meetings with Morsi on Sunday. One of the issues Morsi is certain to bring up as part of the preparation for his visit, would be his pledge to seek the release of Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman from U.S. custody.

The statement, made by Mohammed Morsi in an interview with Fars News Agency published Monday, seems to contradict comments he made in his televised victory speech, where he offered a vague assurance that he would "preserve international accords and obligations."

While the winner is declared and the celebrations in Egypt's squares cannot be ignored, it isn't clear what, exactly, has Mohammed Morsi won, considering the restrictions the Army has placed on his presidency. On Sunday evening, Morsi said he had a "message of peace," and he "will respect all international agreements," but stopped short of mentioning Israel.

Morsi's election will have tremendous reverberations beyond Egypt's borders, and not least for Israel, as the Muslim Brotherhood has questioned the validity of the 30-plus year peace treaty between Israel and Egypt; and is also the inspiration for and closely affiliated with Hamas, which rules in Gaza, and borders both Egypt and Israel.
