US Army Vet Pleads ‘Not Guilty’ on Trying to Join ISIS

Thursday, March 19th, 2015

Turkish authorities caught a U.S. Armed Forces veteran this past January as he was allegedly attempting to join Daesh, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria terror group, or ISIS.

U.S. federal authorities say U.S. Air Force veteran and New Jersey native Tairod Nathan Webster Pugh, 47, flew to Turkey from Egypt in January, but was denied entry to the country. Instead, they say Turkey sent Pugh back to Egypt, who then deported the veteran to the U.S.

(Given the skill and speed with which Turkish authorities caught this suspect, one wonders how three Islamic schoolgirls from the UK managed to sneak through the country into Syria to become Daesh “brides.”)

Pugh was arrested January 10 in Turkey and on January 16 in Asbury Park, New Jersey, and has been held in custody since that time, the Wall Street Journal reported. The alleged wannabe terrorist was formally charged by the federal grand jury with attempting to provide material support to ISIS and obstruction of justice. On Wednesday he pleaded “not guilty” in a New York federal court room, CNN reported.

If found guilty, Pugh could be sentenced to a maximum of 35 years in prison.

According to a post on the blog of the New York-based Anti-Defamation League (ADL), Pugh’s Facebook profile included multiple anti-Semitic and anti-Israel posts as well as posts supporting Hamas.

One of the posts written by Pugh in July 2014 stated in part, “All the evil done by the Jews came from within themselves. On the day of Judgment full responsibility of the starving, torture, jailing and killing of innocent Muslims will rest upon there (sic) shoulders. Allah must really hate them to give the rope to hang themselves.” He also posted an image with text stating, “Most Jews do not like to admit it, but our G-d is Lucifer.”

In August 2014, he shared an image that referenced blood libel accusations, depicting Israel’s Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu slitting the throats of sleeping children. Pugh also posted several cartoons equating Jews, Israelis or Zionists to Nazis, as well as numerous images claiming to depict Israeli war crimes.

Under questioning while being held in Egypt prior to deportation to the U.S. Pugh claimed he had traveled to Turkey to seek employment, denying he had intended to go to Syria, according to the criminal complaint filed in Brooklyn federal court.

However, a search of the suspect’s laptop by federal agents turned up a map of Turkish-Syrian border crossing points, and some 180 jihadist propaganda videos – including a number showing ISIS prisoners being executed. Also found on his laptop was a letter addressed to “My Misha,” whicch stated, “I will use the talents and skills given to me by Allah to establish and defend the Islamic States.”

That Pugh refers to ‘Islamic States’ in the plural form is, in fact, quite chilling: Daesh has indeed spread its influence and its forces from Iraq and Syria into a number of other countries, including Yemen, Nigeria and Libya. Pockets of terrorist cells have also been found in the Sinai Peninsula, Gaza, Lebanon, France, Belgium, and Denmark.

Pugh was charged with “obstruction of justice” in response to the suspect’s intentional damage and removal of memory chips from four thumb drives in order to stymie law enforcement officials in their attempts to access data, authorities said. According to the criminal complaint, Pugh was also asked why he had a photo of a machine gun on his cell phone. He replied that he had “no particular reason other than simply liking the photograph.”

But Pugh’s history did not begin with his flight to the Turkish-Syrian border; actually he has been on the “watch list” for more than 10 years. Quoting the criminal complaint, the Wall Street Journal reported that Pugh converted to Islam and then started ramping up his radical sympathies after moving to San Antonio in 1998.

The FBI received a first tip from a co-worker while Pugh was working as a mechanic for American Airlines in 2001, when he was saying he sympathized with Al Qaeda terrorist leader Osama bin Laden and supported the 1998 bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Africa. By 2002, the FBI heard that Pugh had expressed interest in traveling to Chechnya to fight the jihad (Islamic holy war.)

Pugh had already worked as an Air Force mechanic from 1986 to 1990, and was assigned to various bases around the world, according to the U.S. Air Force. He lived abroad for some 18 months, including in Egypt and Jordan, prior to his arrest, according to the criminal complaint. But following his discharge, Pugh had trouble holding down a steady job.

At some point from 2009 to 2010, he worked as an Army contractor for a five month period in Iraq.

Earlier this year, he was fired again, this time from a gig as an airplane mechanic for a firm “based in the Middle East.”

Last Friday, three Brooklyn men also pleaded “not guilty” in Brooklyn federal court to charges of conspiring to aid the ISIS terrorist organization.

Over the past 18 months “dozens” of Americans have faced criminal charges relating to ISIS. FBI director James Comey said at a news briefing last month that his agency has active cases open “in every single state” in connection with the ISIS terror organization.

According to the Wall Street Journal, “Preventing Americans from joining ISIS has become a priority for federal law-enforcement officials, but they have been unable to find a singular profile of the type of American who is inspired by the militant group’s propaganda.”

Due to the lack of a hat, a tip of the keyboard will have to do for kudos to WSJ journalists Dion Nissenbaum and Nicole Hong for being able to compose and type that last with a (presumed) straight face.

ISIS Terror Spreads to Africa — Boko Haram Kills 50 in Nigeria

Monday, March 9th, 2015

Daesh, or ISIS – also known as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria – has now spread its tentacles into Nigeria, where the Boko Haram terror organization formally pledged its allegiance to the group this weekend.

More than 50 people are dead and some 140 others wounded in northeast Nigeria following a suicide bombing allegedly carried out by Boko Haram. The Nigerian terror group has been attempting to create its own Islamic state in northern Nigeria since 2009.

Forces from Niger, Cameroon and Chad launched a ground and air offensive early Sunday against the terrorist force in northeastern Nigeria, the BBC reported. More than 8,000 troops have been gathered to create a regional force endorsed by the African Union, to target the terrorists in Borno State.

Radical Islamists from another North African terror group, al-Murabitun, shot and killed five people at a bar popular with expatriates in Mali on Saturday.

One French national, a Belgian citizen and three Malians were killed, along with eight others who were wounded. Al-Murabitun claimed responsibility for the attack in an audio message, according to the Maritanian news agency Al Akhbar

Boko Haram Pledges Allegiance to ISIS

Sunday, March 8th, 2015

The Nigerian Boko Haram terrorist organization has posted a video in which it pledges loyalty to the Islamic State (ISIS), which may or may not return the favor.

Boko Haram recently has copied some of the ISIS’s methods, including beheading, but the group simply may be trying to ramp up pressure on the Nigerian government.

The ISIS has become a threat beyond Iraq and Syria. Egypt last month bombed ISIS bases in Libya after the Islamic terrorists murdered nearly a dozen Egyptian Christian Copts.

Boko Haram’s 6000-man force would be an asset for ISIS if it chooses to accept Boko Haram as an ally, but a history of Islamic terrorist crazies is littered with broken agreements because no one wants to yield power.

Reports have surfaced that ISIS attracting young people from Nigeria, which would be a part of the caliphate state imagined by ISIS.

Boko Haram controls territory in northeast Nigeria, which borders Libya.

Jacob Zenn, a Jamestown Foundation expert on Boko Haram, told CNN:

Boko Haram joining the ISIS fold makes sense to both groups.  Boko Haram will get legitimacy, which will help its recruiting, funding and logistics as it expands into (French-speaking) West Africa. It will also get guidance from ISIS in media warfare and propaganda. Previously Boko Haram was a sort of outcast in the global Jihadi community. Now it is perhaps ISIS’s biggest affiliate.

ISIS gets more international legitimacy as a global caliphate.

He added that ISIS and Boko Harem last month apparently established a Twitter account that carried the video on Saturday proclaiming the Nigerian’s group loyalty to ISIS.

Islamist 10-Year-old Girl Blows Herself Up in Nigerian Suicide Attack

Tuesday, February 24th, 2015

A girl estimated to be around 10 years old blew herself up, killed four people and wounded 46 others in a suicide attack in Nigeria, the Associated Press reported.

The Nigerian Boko Haram terrorist group is suspected of being behind the attack. Authorities so far have not been able to identify the girl, who was blown up to pieces, but her suicide might be only  a preview of more atrocities from the Islamic State (ISIS), Boko Harem and other radical Islamic terrorists who kidnap girls.

Their victims usually are older than the young girl in Sunday’s attack.

Boko Haram is the same group of barbarians who kidnapped 276 schoolgirls, most of them Christians, last April. All but a few remain missing, and Boko Haram has claimed they converted to Islam and were given as wives to terrorists.

The terrorist army has been fighting five years to make Nigeria, whose population is divided between Muslims and Christians, into an Islamic state.

Beware! Beheading Becoming New Fashion for Jihad Terrorists

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2014

Beware! Beheading is rapidly becoming the new fashion method for terrorists. The Islamic State’s methods are spreading very quickly to other geographic arenas in the Middle East and Africa.

In the past couple of weeks we have heard about cases of beheading in numerous other countries. There have been such cases reported in Lebanon, in the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt, and in Nigeria as well, the latter carried out by the Boko Haram group who kidnapped hundreds of Christian girls for slaves several months ago.

Unfortunately the media – especially the social media – has no doubt played a major role in exporting the idea of beheading from Iraq and Syria to other parts of the world.

Reports of the incidents zip around the world with each new beheading, although such barbaric methods are not new. Journalist James Foley was not the first victim. And journalist Steve Sotloff, a Jewish Israeli-American dual citizen who hid both his Judaism and his Israeli citizenship, just joined his beheaded colleague.

We have already seen what Abu Mus’ab al-Zarqawi did to Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl. We saw what happened to British soldier Lee Rigby in the streets of London.

Now, I am afraid, beheading has become a fashion; an acceptable, legitimate, ‘regular’ method of jihad.

The Western silence is shocking. Everyone says it is “there” and not “here.” “Who cares about ‘them’?” “Let them kill each other.”

Where are the demonstrations against the beheading of the Yazidis? Where is the support for the Christians in Nigeria? Where are all the moderate Muslims? Why don’t we hear their condemnation of this ‘fashion’ of beheading?

The world is sleep-walking!!

Be warned: if the world continues to simply bat helplessly away in deafening silence, beheading will become a fashion in “our” place as well. If will cross continents and oceans, and no place will remain immune.

Wake up before it’s too late. I hope and pray I am wrong; but I fear that I am only too right.

Israeli Team to Assist with the Rescue of Abducted Nigerian Girls

Monday, May 12th, 2014

JERUSALEM – Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has accepted Israel’s offer to assist with the tracking down of the 200 kidnapped Nigerian girls, and a team of Israeli counter-terror specialists will assist the Nigerian forces in rescuing the girls.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is on a visit to Japan, spoke earlier yesterday (May 11) with Nigerian President Jonathan and told him that Israel expresses deep shock over the crime that has been committed against the girls. The Prime Minister added that Israel is ready to assist in locating the girls and in fighting the brutal terrorism that is taking place in Nigeria. In an official statement by the Nigerian President office read: “President Jonathan has accepted Mr. Netanyahu’s offer to send a team of Israeli counter-terrorist specialists to assist in the ongoing search and rescue efforts.”

On April 14th Islamic militants from the Boko Haram terror organization stormed a secondary school in the northeastern village of Chibok and seized 276 girls who were taking exams. Some managed to escape, but around 200 remain missing.

Reuters reports that The United States and Britain have flown in experts and this, coupled with the deployment by Nigeria of two army divisions to the border region, signals that the search effort is gathering pace. They will now by joined by a team of Israeli experts.

Israel has defense ties with Nigeria, and has provided it in the past with surveillance drones. Last September, Israel was among several countries that sent advisers to Kenya to assist in a stand-off with Islamist terrorists who attacked a mall in Nairobi.

A Female Role Model of Humanity in Israel

Sunday, May 11th, 2014

A startling contrast presently exists in the world between the extraordinary educational and cultural success of a woman of minority origin in Israel and the denial of education for females by a brutal, fanatical Islamist group in Nigeria.

Israel can be unquestionably proud of Dr. Rania Okby, a specialist in maternal fetal medicine, who is the first female Bedouin doctor in the world and a role model for Bedouin women in Israel.

On the other hand, Nigerians, and those who regard themselves as peaceful Muslims, must be embarrassed by or ashamed of the actions of Boko Haram. This is the Islamic terrorist group that specializes in non-medical matters: bombings, murders, assassinations, and, on April 14, 2014, the abduction of more than 275 mostly Christian teenage girls from their secondary school in Chibok in northeast Nigeria. This in order to prevent them from being educated in a secular manner and to sell them into sexual slavery.

The Bedouin community in Israel, numbering about 250,000, is the least developed group in the country. Its members have been handicapped by their lifestyle, which among other things has meant the following: lack of a strong educational system, forced marriages of underage girls, consanguineous marriages, high average birthrate of six per Bedouin woman, restrictions on women working outside the home, and high unemployment. Part of the community lives in unauthorized villages without electricity or proper medical care. In those villages, life expectancy is lower than elsewhere in Israel.

Positive social and cultural change does not happen overnight, and it is rewarding when it does occur. Programs at Ben-Gurion University (BGU) in Beersheba in the Negev are helping to change Bedouin lives. In 1997 the Arnow Center for Bedouin Studies and Development was founded. At that point there were no Bedouin women studying at BGU. Today, more than 60% of the 2,678 Bedouin students at BGU are women.

From the Bedouin community, in its interaction with modern Israeli society, emerged Rania Okby with a remarkable success story. Okby was raised by a single mother who had divorced her husband when he, following Muslim law, wanted to exercise his right to take a second wife. Okby did well in high school, spending extra time to learn English, and enrolled at the age of 16 in the medical school at BGU – the first Bedouin girl to study medicine. As a student, she moved between the Israeli western milieu at the university, during the hours between 8 am and 4 pm, and the traditional society and world of her Bedouin community after 4 pm. She graduated in 2004, having been fully funded by BGU’s outreach program, and after that has been a post-grad both in Israel and in other countries.

As well as being a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology, with at least two important articles concerning the cycle of pregnancy to birth, she has influenced Bedouin society as an informal psychologist, sociologist, counselor, and social worker, especially on marital issues among the Bedouins. At present, 12 out of every 1,000 Bedouin children die within their first year, and most women are married by the age of 18.

Dr. Okby’s objective is to educate the women of the community and thus change this situation. She has explained that these women are afraid to use contraception since their husbands want more children. In a broader context, she has been concerned with “honor killings” by Muslim men and has helped to protect young women from their families.

With her concern for the education of women, Dr. Okby is a symbol of the future – not only in regard to people of the Bedouin community, but also through the significance of her role for women elsewhere.
