A Pillar of Fire at Night: Iron Dome in Action Over Be’er Sheva (Video)

Sunday, November 18th, 2012

We invite you to view a slice of ordinary/extraordinary life in Israel in this video.

Be’er Sheva is an ancient/modern desert city that most people visit, if they ever go there, because of its first-rateuniversity (Ben Gurion) and its hospital, one of the busiest in Israel. But like many forgotten places in various parts of the world, it’s also home for a certain number of people, nearly 200,000 of them.

Now that Tel Aviv and Jerusalem and practically every other Israeli community in the southern half of Israel have experienced the blood-chilling sound of air-raid sirens in the past three days (and in some places, many repeats of the experience), it may be interesting for people living far from here to see and hear what it feels like from the ground.

We don’t know the exact number, but the residents of Be’er Sheva have experienced dozens of incoming missile warnings since Wednesday night. The one captured in this video involves multiple rockets flying in from Gaza. Through the magic of videography, they appear here as floating fairy lights in an ink-black sea of heavens above the ground-level festivities of an ordinary shopping center.

Then one after another in rapid succession they are extinguished. The reality of what is happening is much less poetic, but astonishing when you pause to think about it: an anti-missile technology that did not exist anywhere in the world is now knocking these terrorist flying bombs out of the sky as the ordinary folk who are the actual targets of an attempt to kill them in quantities watch from below and quietly applaud.

It’s larger than life. But it’s life. Our life, for now.

2:00 AM Reports are coming in of a number of massive IDF attacks across Gaza.

Among the major attacks is that the IDF has destroyed over 70 medium range missile launchers in the past hour.

Another is a strike on a major Hamas security building in the Sheikh Reduan neighborhood of Gaza City, as well as the destruction of at least 2 large weapons storage facilities.

These are in addition to other attacks throughout Gaza.

12:53 AM Many Palestinian Web Sites are claiming the IDF ground offensive has started, yet Hamas is chiding them for spreading lies and propaganda and causing panic.

Israel Air Force Pummeling Gaza Terror Targets At Rate of 1 Every 51 Seconds

Thursday, November 15th, 2012

The Israeli Air Force reportedly hit 70 targets between 9 and 10pm Thursday, including underground medium-range rocket launching pads, bringing the total number of IAF strikes in Operation Pillar of Defense to over 300.

Gaza terrorists continue to lob rockets at Israeli civilians, firing over 275 since Pillar of Defense began.

Two rockets reportedly headed toward Tel Aviv, causing air raid sirens to be sounded in the city for the first time since the Gulf War, and was the first time rockets from Gaza have ever been in range of Israel’s financial capital.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak said 30,000 reservists may be called up to provide support to a broader ground war in Gaza.

Anti-Semitic Incidents in the US at a 20-Year Low

Tuesday, November 13th, 2012

The number of anti-Semitic incidents in the United States declined by 13% in 2011, according to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). The annual ADL Audit of Anti-Semitic Incidents reported a total of 1,080 incidents of assault, vandalism and harassment, compared to 1,239 incidents reported in 2010.

It is the lowest number of anti-Semitic incidents recorded by ADL in the past two decades.

“It is encouraging that over the past five or six years we have seen a consistent decline in the number of anti-Semitic incidents across the country and that the numbers are now at a historic low,” said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. “To the extent that these incidents serve as a barometer, the decline shows that we have made progress as a society in confronting anti-Semitism and pushing it to the far fringes, making expressions of anti-Jewish hatred unacceptable. These declining numbers, while promising, must nevertheless be viewed in the context of other factors, including online expressions of anti-Semitism that are impossible to quantify and often go unchecked.”

Among the more disturbing trends noted in the 2011 ADL Audit is the prevalence of reports across the country of incidents of school bullying, where Jewish students reported being harassed and intimidated by their peers using offensive anti-Semitic stereotypes or comments evoking the Nazis or the Holocaust.

“ADL continues to receive a distressing number of complaints about children, adolescents and teenagers engaging in anti-Semitic behavior, both on and off school grounds,” said Robert G. Sugarman, ADL National Chair. “These have included physical assaults, treats of violence, and verbal and written taunts promoting anti-Semitic stereotypes or evoking disturbing Holocaust themes. We believe that these types of incidents show there is an ongoing need for comprehensive programming promoting diversity and tolerance and combating bullying of all kinds as well as a continued emphasis on Holocaust education in the schools, so that the next generation of students can fully understand the history of that period and the consequences of unchecked hatred, prejudice and bigotry.”

It’s Raining Rockets Again

Sunday, November 11th, 2012

I have to much I want to write about…but my mind is filled with two numbers – 30, and 9. Thirty is the number of rockets fired at Israel last night, hours after an Israel armored jeep was hit with an anti-tank missile, critically injuring two, lightly injuring two other soldiers. Nine is the number of rockets that had been fired at Israel by 9:00 this morning…schools in some areas are closed; people again ordered to stay near shelters.

Again comes from Gaza the ridiculous claims of injuries – simultaneously announcing the names of new martyrs – all members of Islamic Jihad or some other terrorist group; all engaged in attempting to fire rockets while they were taken out of action.

Again, someone writes to me about homemade rockets in Gaza. What the heck is a homemade rocket? This is artillery they are firing at us – it is traveling as much as 40 km. These are GRAD missiles – most smuggled in from Iran. As Elie said, “their rockets are as homemade as ours. We make ours in labs here; they make theirs in labs in Iran!”

Again, someone dismisses forty rockets fired at Israel because they only managed to injure four people – never mind that less were hurt because with each Color Red siren begins the mad dash for shelter; because most people last night gave up moving their children to their bedrooms and just camped out in bomb shelters. How can you possibly mourn the deaths of three men who are firing at one million civilians more than the terrified people they target?

A school was hit this morning; two homes as well. Three people injured; cars and other property damage. One report is saying 70 rockets have been fired in the last 15 hours or so…70 rockets.

Huge Terror Tunnel Explodes Underneath IDF Patrol

Friday, November 9th, 2012

On Thursday evening, the Gazans remotely exploded a terror tunnel filled with enough explosives to send an overhead IDF jeep flying meters into the air. Miraculously, no one was injured.

IDF Spokesperson Brig. Gen. Yoav (Poly) Mordechai stated that in recent weeks, a number of incidents have occurred in the southern Gaza Strip, including an attack using explosives against an IDF armored personnel carrier, an attack that injured a company commander, and another attack with explosives two days ago.

In addition, over the past two weeks, Palestinian terrorists have been exploding bombs along the Gaza border, one resulted in a Givati Captain Ziv Shilon losing his hand. On Thursday morning a tank was damaged in a mortar attack, and later in the day a construction working building the security fence was injured.

Subsequently, according to Mordechai, the new Gaza Division Commander decided to operate proactively to the west of the Gaza border fence.

An engineering force that operated at the site located a number of powerful explosive devices. With the end of this force’s activity, as it worked to repair the border fence, an explosion occurred in a terror tunnel. This was a very large explosion that exposed a tunnel roughly four meters deep and four meters wide. An empty IDF vehicle that was in the area was thrown into the air from the force of the explosion.

“It is possible that the incident was related to the discovery of explosives west of the [Gaza border] fence,” said the IDF Spokesperson. “We understand that this was a terror tunnel or a tunnel that was prepared for other things since there was a gap between the explosion and the neutralization. This was a very large tunnel, something which we haven’t experienced lately.”

According to Nana, one soldier was lightly injured, but did not need to be taken to the hospital.

Defense Minister Barak said, “Hamas is responsible and Israel will decide when and how to respond.”

According to Mordechai, this morning, IDF forces will continue searching in the area, and a situation assessment will be held, led by GOC Southern Command Maj. Gen. Tal Russo.
