Two Very Different Jews Memorialized on Saturday

Sunday, October 28th, 2012

Memorials for two memorable Jews took place this weekend, though they stood, perhaps, on opposite sides of the political spectrum.

The Matriarch Rachel, wife of the Patriarch Jacob and mother to biblical figures Joseph and Benjamin, was remembered on the 11th of the Jewish month of Cheshvan, being visited by a reported 70,000+ of her and her husband’s descendants.  Jews from all over Israel and all walks of life came on Friday and Saturday night to pay their respects to the beloved matriarch, who is considered to be the mother of aliyah, said to be weeping for her exiled children by the prophet Jeremiah.

On Saturday night, a somewhat different Jew was also remembered, albeit by a significantly smaller and less pious crowd.  Less than 25,000 people gathered in Tel Aviv on Saturday night to remember former Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin.  Less a celebration of his life and accomplishments than a nostalgic gathering for Oslo and reflection on his murder, the Rabin memorial this year was themed “Remembering the Murder: Fighting for Democracy”.

Israeli Foreign Minister Replies to Condemnation of Jewish Growth

Sunday, October 21st, 2012

Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman urged the European Union on Saturday to focus on its own problems and stay out of the local dispute between Arabs and Jews over the future of Judea, Samaria, and the rest of Israel.

Vice President of the EU’s European Commission Catherine Ashton said on Friday that she “deeply regrets” Israel’s plans to expand the Jerusalem neighborhood of Gilo.

“Settlements are illegal under international law and threaten to make a two-state solution impossible,” she said.

Lieberman replied on Saturday that her statements “attest to a fundamental lack of ability to understand regional reality” and “merely encourage the Palestinian side … to pursue anti-Israel activity in the international sphere”.

He suggested the EU “focus, for now, on the problems arising among the various peoples and national groups on Europe’s territory, and once there is a successful solution we would be happy to hear recommendations for solving the problems with the Palestinians”.

No Humanitarian Supplies Found On Board ‘Estelle,’ Entire Effort Was a Provocation

Sunday, October 21st, 2012

Hours after the Israeli Navy took over, without violent resistance, the ship “Estelle” which sought to reach Gaza to lift the blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip – on Saturday night was moored in the port of Ashdod.

Israel is seeking the expulsion Sunday night via an expedited procedure of 27 foreign activists who were on board, while three Israeli activists were delivered to the Ashdod police on suspicion of attempting entry to an area barred by military. The three are expected to be remanded to their cells while police investigation continues..

A military source told Walla that, following an extensive search of the “Estelle,” no humanitarian supplies were found, which were supposedly being delivered to the people of Gaza. “This is a provocation that could have been prevented if they had passed the humanitarian supplies through legal crossings,” said the source.

Navy vessels took over the boat in the morning hours Saturday, while it was just 15 nautical miles from the Gaza coast. Ship activists, including Swedish civilians, past and present European members of parliament, and leftist activists Dror Feiler and Jonathan Shapiro, said that the ship was surrounded by Israeli forces in the morning, and, after a few hours, masked soldiers came were on board.

According to the IDF Spokesperson’s office: “Despite numerous calls to the passengers onboard, they remained unwilling to cooperate with Israeli authorities. After the passengers ignored calls to change course, the decision was made to board the vessel and lead it to the port of Ashdod.”

The statement continued: “The Israeli Navy soldiers operated as planned and took every precaution necessary to ensure the safety of the passengers. After the boarding of the vessel by IDF soldiers, who did not use force, the passengers were attended to and offered food and beverages.”

“The real criminal offenses have been made by those who kidnapped people in international waters and not by the activists,” said attorney Gaby Lasky, who represents the flotilla activists. “So it’s hard for me to believe that there are any grounds for an indictment, but on the contrary – there’s a civil case against the IDF. This was an illegal detention and we demand the release of all the activists immediately. Every attempt to stop the activists will be considered an act of intimidation to keep them from continuing their activities.”

She added: “It is puzzling to me that someone who himself is violating international law by taking over the ship outside of Israel’s territorial waters, is demanding to prosecute [my clients].”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the takeover and said that “even the people who were on the ship knew there was no humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and their only goal was to create a provocation and to slander Israel.”

Netanyahu concluded: “If human rights were really important to them, they would be sailing to Syria. We will continue to protect our borders with intensity and determination.”

Abu Mazen Negates 2-State Solution, Wants All of Israel

Wednesday, October 17th, 2012

On his official Facebook page last Saturday, Palestinian President Abu Mazen (Mahmoud Abbas) negated the concept of 2 states divided on the basis of the Green Line, and said that the Palestinians also have claims to the “lands the Israelis occupied before 1967″.

In his post Abbas says that he doesn’t just claim the West Bank, but wants to take all of the Land of Israel. By the UN to recognizing Palestinian rights to the West Bank, “it also proves that Palestinians have rights to all the land that is occupied.”

In short, Abu Mazen is saying he doesn’t support a two-state solution and an end to the conflict, just an end to Israel.

PM Netanyahu said in July that, “The Palestinians haven’t made peace all these years, ever since Israel began talks with them, because they are not just talking about the West bank, but they also want Haifa and Tel Aviv, and have not given up on that dream.”

Abu Mazen just confirmed that.

British Ambassador Responds to Hatzalah Calls

Wednesday, October 17th, 2012

British Ambassador Matthew Gould teamed up with United Hatzalah on emergency medical calls in Tel Aviv last Saturday night, getting a firsthand glimpse of the life-saving work the group does in Israel.

Joining founder and president Eli Beer and volunteer Elad Nissanholtz, Gould shed his business suit and donned street clothes and a helmet, riding to emergencies on the back of a Haztazlah “ambucycle” equipped to provide first aid at a moment’s notice.

Gould’s team responded to a severe car accident, a heart attack, and a 97 year old with breathing difficulties, a total of 6 responses in one shift.

Gould said he was impressed with Hatzalah’s quick treatment, its treatment of people of all races, religions, and nationalities, and its ability to coordinate with Magen David Adom emergency medical services.

Sunday, October 14th, 2012

MK Danny Danon (Likud) on Saturday night asked Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to fire Defense Minister Ehud Barak, in response to the latter’s remarks against the Likud.

“Barak is a dying breed. His wacky statements are the symptoms of his being a political corpse. He used to head the government and now he heads only himself,” Danon said.
