Misogy-text: Saudi Men Get SMS When Women Leave the Country

Wednesday, November 28th, 2012

A new electronic tracking system sends SMS messages to the male guardians of Saudi Arabian women who attempt to cross the border, according to a report in Al-Arabiya.

Men will receive the text messages even if their custodians are travelling with them. Women are not allowed to leave Saudi Arabia without the written consent of their male guardians.

According to the report, the program was instituted after the recent escape of a Saudi woman to Sweden, following her surreptitious conversion to Christianity.  The woman, who was interviewed in Saudi Arabia’s Al-Yaum newspaper, denied ever having left Islam, and said she intends to return to Saudi Arabia, saying she only left to escape some family problems.

Saudi Arabia applies the strictest interpretation of Shariah Islamic law, and does not permit women to drive cars.

Last year, King Abdullah granted women the right to vote for the first time.

Abbas Tells PA to Find New President

Thursday, September 20th, 2012

“You have 10 days until I return from the United States.  You must start the search for a new president,” Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas told government factions on Wednesday, according to a report in the Saudi Arabian newspaper Alwatan.

The Palestinian Authority has reported major financial hardships, continued tension with Hamas, and a failure to get Israel to the negotiating table on its terms.  Israel sent the PA an advance of tax revenues to cover their reported costs, and the PA has appealed to the international community for donations, though the US and Arab countries have not come through.

Hamas and Fatah have made repeated attempts at reconciliation, but reunions have been shortlived.

Arab League Suspends Syria

Sunday, November 13th, 2011

In the wake of a 7 month crackdown on opposition by Syrian President Bashar Assad, and the deaths of at least 3,500 civilians, the Arab League on Saturday declared it would impose economic and political sanctions on Syria, and called on members to recall their ambassadors from the country.

Hours later, hundreds of Assad supporters attacked the Saudi Arabian embassy and the Turkish and French consulates.

On Tuesday officials of the Arab League are set to meet members of the Syrian opposition. While  visiting Tripoli, the Arab League’s Secretary General, Nabil Elaraby, said it was too early to recognize the opposition members as a government.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called the Arab League decision to suspend Syria on Saturday “strong and courageous”, something which showed “the Leagues’s intention to provide protection for the civilians.”
