The Rose Nomination

It has largely passed under the radar screen, but Stephanie Rose, who was the deputy chief of the criminal division in the U.S. attorney’s office in northern Iowa at the time of the Agriprocessors immigration and Rubashkin prosecutions, has been nominated by President Obama to be a federal judge.

Councilman: Down with ‘Super Jewish’ Senate Seat

NY1 News reports that Councilman David G. Greenfield (D-Brooklyn) is about to denounce the creation of the so-called Super Jewish state Senate seat, merging...

Vice PM Yaalon Disappointed By Obama’s Hesitation On Iran

Yaalon contrasted Obama's stance with that of France and Britain.

President Obama Makes His Move

We do not mean to denigrate the impressive military support and cooperation the Obama administration has directed toward Israel.

Buchanan Again

Over the years the Monitor has on several occasions revisited the matter of Pat Buchanan's apparent obsession with Jews and Israel. The list of his statements about Jews and Israel, ranging from the insensitive to the derogatory, continues to grow, most recently with his complaint that if the Senate confirms Obama nominee Elena Kagan, "Jews, who represent less than 2 percent of the U.S. population, will have 33 percent of the Supreme Court seats."

Congress Must Challenge Obama On Israel

The silence continues to be deafening with no Democrat in Congress to my knowledge crying out against President Obama for continuing to try to diminish America's closeness to Israel.

Tsunami In Massachusetts?

With the outgoing and endlessly embattled Bush administration showing signs of exhaustion in 2008 and the onslaught of an unforeseen financial crisis, Democrats won the U.S. presidency while gaining an overwhelming majority in the House of Representatives and 60 veto-proof seats in the U.S. Senate (thanks, in part, to a disputed Minnesota election putting TV comic Al Franken over the top in his state and the inclusion of Vermont Socialist Bernie Sanders and Connecticut Independent Joe Lieberman).

Hillary Reopens Old Wounds

Back in late 1999 through the fall of 2000, when Hillary Clinton was first running for the U.S. Senate, this column had some uncomplimentary things to say about the then-first lady. From time to time since her election, readers have wondered whether the Monitor had any second thoughts, especially given Sen. Clinton’s generally solid foreign policy record.

With Biden On Board, Can Obama Be Trusted?

Many American Jewish observers welcomed Barack Obama's selection of Sen. Joseph Biden as his vice-presidential running mate.

The Arch of Titus: Am Yisroel Chai

I walked slowly away from the Coliseum in Rome. Completed in 80 C.E. by the Emperor Titus it was used for almost 500 years for countless gladiatorial games and bloody spectacles.

Disappointing Political Machinations

We are disappointed to report that because of the last minute intransigence of New York's Governor George Pataki, the state Senate failed to pass the two bills important to the Jewishcommunity which we wrote about last week, and which had been passed earlier by the Assembly.

Anti-McCarthy McCarthyism

Joe McCarthy was in the news last week, and once again the Monitor took due note of the fact that the late senator from Wisconsin - certainly when compared with his more hystericalcritics - was a mere piker in the fine art of innuendo and allegation.

Senator Clinton And The Magen David Adom

It will be recalled that The Jewish Press took the lead in criticizing Hillary Clinton during her campaign for the Senate last year. But the fact that we took a back seat to no one in hammering Candidate Clinton for her appalling record on Israel in no way inhibits us from applauding Senator Clinton for her lead role in the efforts to get the International Red Cross to grant membership to the Magen David Adom Society, Israel's rescue and relief service.
