Project Daniel: Israel’s Preemption And Nuclear Warfighting Doctrine (Part Eight)

My prior column in this special series dealt with the existential threat to Israel. To best deal with this multifaceted threat, Project Daniel recommended to Prime Minister Sharon that Israel do everything possible to prevent a coalition of enemy states from coming into possession of mass destruction weapons, and that this effort be undertaken while Israel continues with its longstanding policy of nuclear ambiguity.

Europeans Rank Israel As Greatest Threat To Peace

JERUSALEM - Nearly 60 percent of Europeans say that Israel represents the greatest threat to world peace, according to a survey of more than 7,500 residents of European Union countries.

The Jihad of Avram Bornstein

Perhaps the fastest way to make sense of this book by Avram Bornstein, an untenured "anthropologist" at John Jay College of Criminal Justice within the City University of New York system, is to pay attention to how he uses quotation marks. The book routinely refers to Israel as an apartheid regime, with no quotation marks. And it routinely refers to Palestinian "terrorism" with them. Need we say more? We hope the tenure committee at John Jay is paying attention.

Phase II Coming Up?

There is growing evidence that now that success in Afghanistan is within reach, the President is serious about pursuing the war against terrorism to other venues. One senses an almost palpable effort to prepare the world community for the so-called Phase II. It will be recalled that Mr. Bush declared soon after September 11th that targeting Osama bin Laden and his Taliban protectors would be Phase I, and that neutralizing the terror network around the world would constitute Phase II. And it is fast emerging that Iraq will be the first step.

Spinning Reality

There is no question that many everyday Palestinians experience disruption in their daily lives because of Israeli security measures against infiltration. It could not be otherwise but that Israel's need to restrict terrorist access to its citizens would also impact on the mobility of those workaday Palestinians. There also can be no question that the overhanging Palestinian terrorist threat is the reason for the stringent Israeli security measures. So, although we have come not to expect too much objectivity these days from The New York Times, the "paper of record" outdid itself on Tuesday. For The Times, the only story to be told about Israel's security measures was the impact they are having on Palestinian civilians.
