A Values Agenda For The Next President

The next president of the United States will need to address the crumbling social fabric of this great nation.

Stop The Lobby!

In an amazing development, archeologists digging in the campus grounds of Harvard University near the statue of John Harvard have uncovered a forgotten buried document about a long-defunct organization of professors and students operating on American campuses in 1937.

On IDF Refusals To Follow Orders: The Interlocking Perspectives Of National Law, International Law...

In Claude Lanzmann's monumental documentary, SHOAH, one of the surviving leaders of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising remarks: "If you could lick my heart, it would poison you." Sadly, the time may still come - if Prime Minister Olmert is permitted to continue following Washington's cartography - that surviving Israelis will someday express similar sentiments.

Facing Enemies Who Prefer War To Peace: The Endless Futility Of Israeli Diplomacy

Already from its imperiled beginnings in May 1948 - indeed, even before statehood - Israel has sought desperately to negotiate with its enemies. Always, always - it has preferred peace to war. Nonetheless, challenged by interminable Arab aggression and subversion, diplomacy has almost always failed Israel.

The United States And Saudi Arabia: A Foolish Alliance

In view of major current developments concerning Saudi Arabia, Israel and the United States (especially the recently-announced sale of billions of dollars of new advanced weapon systems to Saudi Arabia), this very early article by Professor Beres warrants another close look. One must wonder, as all of Professor Beres' prior warnings on Saudi Arabia have now proved correct, why President Bush insists upon further arms for Riyadh. At a minimum, the president should be concerned that the monarchy could soon be overthrown by al-Qaeda and kindred Jihadist elements, a transfer of power that would give Islamist insurgents control over all of the latest advanced American weapons.

The Jewish Community Of St. Eustatius

The small island of St. Eustatius [in Dutch: Sint Eustatius, and now named simply Statia] is one of the Netherlands Antilles islands, along with St Maarten, Saba, Cura?ao, and Bonaire.

Another Illegal Israeli Mass Terrorist Release

Seeking to strengthen Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas after the Hamas triumph in Gaza, Israeli Prime Minister Olmert now intends to free many Fatah terrorists. "As a gesture of good will towards the Palestinians," Mr. Olmert announced at the Sharm El-Sheik summit with Abbas and the leaders of Egypt and Jordan, "I will bring before the Israeli Cabinet a proposal to free 250 Fatah prisoners who do not have blood on their hands." There should be no problem, he continued, because the Fatah men "must sign a commitment not to return to violence."

Tending The Garden

I'm often asked why it is that men played such a major role in Jewish history.

‘The Horror…The Horror’: Facing Nuclear War In The Middle East (Conclusion)

'Faced with imminent and existential attacks, Israel − properly taking its cue from The National Security Strategy of the United States of America − could decide to preempt enemy aggression with conventional forces.

The Suicide Bomber, Again

My daughter once worked on a kibbutz near Eilat, so the suicide bombing on January 29 in that normally tranquil Red Sea resort is especially sobering. This Palestinian "freedom fighter" struck a small bakery, killing three shoppers who had stopped by for bread and cakes. The two groups taking responsibility for the terror, Islamic Jihad and the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, were ecstatic about the success of their "military operation."

Chelm Revisited

We recently returned to Israel after a short visit to the United States.

Wysokie Mazowiecie

Recently the Jewish cemetery at Wysokie Mazowiecie held a ceremony marking the first stage of its restoration project.

The Keys

A visit to the United States, while pleasant, often restores for us the excitement of living in Israel and reminds us of why we went to live there in the first place - especially around this time of year.

Free To Move, Free To Thank

This past week, millions of Americans took advantage of the Thanksgiving holiday to pick themselves up and, alone or with family, get into a car, bus, train or airplane to visit relatives or friends or have a mini-vacation.

As Important As The Threats From Iran And North Korea, Is Countering The Triumphant...

We Americans now live with an entirely reasonable fear of war and terror. Indeed, there is precious little doubt that our country will become a recurrent victim of new attacks by those who openly seek the genocidal destruction of "infidels."

Jimmy Carter’s Disingenuous Diplomacy

Jimmy Carter's new book - Palestine Peace Not Apartheid - should, by all rights, be headed for the remainder bin. Martin Peretz, editor-in-chief of The New Republic, calls it a "tendentious, dishonest and stupid book."

Anorexia And The Orthodox Seminary Girl

Last week my eldest daughter called me from Israel, where she is studying for a year in seminary, crying and terribly distraught. A girl she was friendly with from another seminary had died of anorexia. She was seventeen years old.

A Haunting Tale Of Assimilation

Man's use of "Time" is an artificial system that has been invented as a template to place over nature for convenience.

Freeing Marwan Barghouti Would Violate International Law And Imperil Israel

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has reportedly asked Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to free imprisoned terrorist Marwan Barghouti. Her argument, it would appear, is that the Tanzim leader remains very popular among the Palestinians, and that he is the only Fatah representative who could successfully supplant the Hamas-led government.

Diplomatic Sanctions Won’t Work For Iran

There is no easy answer to the question of ongoing Iranian nuclearization. All options are unappealing, and all will have very substantial costs. For the moment, diplomacy still seems to be the preferred path to crisis remediation, but only because polite conversation and empty threats protect all parties from taking easily identifiable risks.

Ahmadinejad And The Liberalism Of Fools

Last month the impotence of the world Jewish community was on display for all to see.

Facing Iran And Hamas: How Shall Israel Stand?

For the president of Iran, threats to annihilate Israel are now a daily ritual. Were it not for his country's complementary capacity to inflict genuinely existential harms, these threats would not be worrisome. But Iran's capacity to become fully nuclear is now more imminent than had ever been recognized by our own intelligence communities. It follows that a persistent refrain of genocidal intent issuing from Tehran must now be taken with utmost seriousness in Jerusalem.

Remembering The Kielce Pogrom

July 4th is an important date in history. In the United States it is a day to celebrate independence from England.

If You Want My Business, Don’t Make It So Hard

Last week I told Francis' story of how she helped convince a car dealership to put in a permanent ramp and keep it accessible.

Coffin’s Mideast Conformity

William Sloane Coffin Jr., the left-wing Presbyterian minister who gained notoriety in the 1960’s for his militant antiwar stance and his association and identification with radicals of every stripe while serving as chaplain at Yale University, died April 12 at age 81. The coverage in the mainstream media was almost uniformly laudatory – as it invariably is for those who establish themselves as outspoken critics of the United States.

Bush Again Vows U.S. Military Action On Israel’s Behalf

For the second time in two months, President Bush has pledged that if necessary the United States would militarily defend Israel against Iran.

Babies Are No Longer Considered A Blessing

A funny thing happened to me the other day when my wife and I had, thank God, another baby (a boy).

Knowing The Poisoned Heart Of An Islamic ‘Suicide’ Bomber

Science begins with the discovery of regularities. A regular feature of all Islamic "suicide" terrorists is a declared love of death. For us in the West, such declared affections must seem intuitively suspect. After all, they are contrary to everything we normally believe about self-preservation, reason and human behavior.

The Disengagement Deal

On the eve of the unilateral Gaza withdrawal, Ariel Sharon explained his action to the Israeli newspaper Yediot Aharonot:
