Selichot

Sunday, September 9th, 2012

Jewish men at Selichot services at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem.

Why do we call these days and these rituals “Selichot” – Pardons and Forgiveness, when we keep on announcing and confessing our sins? Asks my friend H. from Tzfat. Why don’t we call them Confessions?

Because we assume that God has pleasure in forgiving and pardoning. He answers. This isn’t really about us.

It’s about God’s delight in our newly found sanity, as we prepare for the Days of Awe.

Black Eyed Pea at the Wailing Wall

Tuesday, August 14th, 2012

Allan Pineda Lindo, Jr., better known as apl.de.ap (pronounced “Apple D Ap”), is a Filipino-American rapper, record producer, and drummer, best known as member of the Grammy Award-winning group The Black Eyed Peas.

Apl.de.ap is a frequent visitor to the Holy Land. Here he is at the Wall yesterday, Monday August 13, 2012.

Note the kabalistic red string on his wrist and the security man behind him.

No such thing as too much protection.

We’re told he asked to visit the Temple Mount as well, but police feared that his rapping might be misconstrued as a form of non-Muslim prayer by the true owners and operators of the place, the Waqf, and it would start a major riot.

According to David Brinn of the Jpost, the Black Eyed Peas are steeped in Jewish culture. They shout “Mazal tov” in their hit “I Gotta Feeling,” and they performed “Hava Nagila” in concert, making them a favorite with Israeli audiences.

Can’t have too much Jewish scholarship.

ADL Criticizes Anti-Abortion Center’s Western Wall Motif

Thursday, July 19th, 2012

The Anti-Defamation League blasted a plan by evangelical pastors in Kansas to build a replica of the Western Wall as part of an anti-abortion monument as “an outrageous affront to the Jewish people.”

The International Pro-Life Memorial and National Life Center is being planned by pro-life activists in Wichita. According to its website, http://www.prolifememorial.com, the wall will be “an exact replica of the Western Wall at the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.”

The wall will be fronted with 60 white cross that “symbolize 60 million abortions…60 million little baby boys and girls have been murdered since 1973 in America alone. The International Pro-life Center will endeavor to stop this world wide genocide.”

The activists behind the initiative view the Western Wall – which is also referred to as the Wailing Wall on the website – as the symbol that commemorates Jewish suffering during the Holocaust, and want their replica to memorialize the 60 million aborted fetuses.

“The International Pro-life Center will be a national and international focal point to connect and integrate a variety of services which have the goal of promoting, bring healing, and enhancing human life,” the website says.

The ADL called the proposed center and a perversion of Judaism’s holiest site.

“Over the years we have seen a number of anti-abortion groups compare abortion to the Holocaust, but this takes the misuse of Jewish symbolism and history to another level,” Abraham Foxman, ADL’s national director, said in a statement issued Monday. “The Western Wall, this monumental symbol of Jewish grief and redemption is being co-opted and distorted to promote an anti-abortion agenda and message. Members of the pro-life movement are entitled to their opinions, but we wish they would not express them at the expense of Judaism’s holiest site and the Holocaust.”

The controversy coincided with another Israel-related Christian initiative – the seventh annual gathering of “Christians United for Israel” (CUFI), which is taking place in Washington, D.C.

The conference, the theme of which was Pro-Israel activity on college campuses, drew 5,000 participants from across the U.S., including Pastor John Hagee, Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who spoke via video.

“Without Jerusalem there is no real life in Israel,” Pastor Hagee told a galvanized audience. “The President of the U.S. told people of Jerusalem they can’t build additional homes there. He has no authority to tell them that! They are a democracy!”

Thou Shalt Not Sell the Wailing Wall on Ebay

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz, the Kotel Rabbi, filed a police complaint Monday following a public auction on Ebay of stones from the Wailing Wall. The stones were being offered as amulets of blessings, but Rabbi Rabinowitz claims this is against the law.

The Kotel Rabbi also approached Ebay’s operators requesting them to halt the auction. He also warned that stones that were stolen from the Wall would bring a curse, not a blessing, on those who purchase them.

Israel Remembers Johnny Cash As Strong Supporter

Friday, October 17th, 2003

Country-Western singing legend Johnny Cash, who died last week in Nashville at age 71, was remembered fondly by Israeli officials as a staunch supporter of the Jewish state.

A frequent visitor to Israel, Cash released an album in 1968 titled ‘The Holy Land’ which dealt with his love of the country. The lyrics to one of the songs on that album, ‘Come to the Wailing Wall,’ speak movingly of the strong connection he felt:

“Shout it across the mountain/Shout it cross the sea/We have been delivered/Israel is free/Come to the Wailing Wall…

“Bring the lost ones homeward/Lead them to this shore/The city gates are open/Heaven’s blessing o?er/Come to the Wailing Wall…”

Born in 1932 in Kingsland, Arkansas, Cash worked as a custodian before enlisting in the Air Force, where he picked up the guitar while stationed in Germany. His musical career began in 1955 at about the same time that the rockabilly style of Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis was beginning to cross over to the mainstream pop charts.

After a quick start, Cash’s career went through some lean times. Always candid about his troubles with drugs and the law, Cash attributed his later turnaround to a newfound commitment to biblical Christianity and his marriage to singer June Carter Cash, who died last spring.

Cash’s biggest selling single was the 1969 release ‘A Boy Named Sue,’ a raucous ballad penned by Jewish songwriter Shel Silverstein.

In 1986 Cash received the Shalom Peace Award from the Jewish National Fund.

Shortly after his death was announced, the State of Israel released a statement ‘to express its condolences to the family of the late Johnny Cash, an American icon and true friend of Israel…. Johnny Cash was loved by Israelis and his music will live on in the pubs, cafes and hearts of a grateful nation.’
