Jewish Leaders: ‘US Should Say Attack on Israel is Attack on US’

Outraged by Iranian officials threats that any western acts of war against Syria “will result in the imminent destruction of the Zionist regime of Israel,” on Thursday, August 29, the leadership of the Simon Wiesenthal Center called on the Obama Administration “to declare that an attack on Israel will be treated as an attack against the US, and to ratchet up Washington’s efforts to thwart Tehran’s headlong rush to nuclearization.”

Rabbis Marvin Hier and Abraham Cooper, the dean and associate dean of the SWC, confidently acknowledged that Israel is very capable of defending itself.  Nonetheless, they wanted the U.S. administration to make it clear that Israel, which is not involved in the ongoing civil war of destruction in Syria, must not be threatened by the world’s bullies without the U.S. reminding those bullies who stands with Israel.

“The specter of Israeli citizens lining up for gas masks on the eve of the Jewish New Year is proof enough that Jerusalem has to take all threats, including those from Damascus and its chief ally and partner in the brutal civil war, Iran, very seriously,” the Jewish leaders poignantly noted.

Horrified by the more than 1,300 deaths in the Syrian civil war, the SWC last week urged the U.S. administration to hew to its own stated ‘red line’ and “destroy or remove all WMD [weapons of mass destruction] stockpiles in Syria.”

The rabbis at the Wiesenthal Center were referring to the threat against Israel uttered by Iranian Revolutionary Guard Chief General Mohammad Ali Jafari.

The US and Israel should go farther than this, and negotiate and ratify a mutual defense treaty such as the one the US has with Japan. Even better would be for Israel to join NATO.

If Israel is going to be dependent on the likes of an anti semitic President like Obama, Israel is better off going it alone against Iran or any other aggressive neighbor. The USA has shown its true mettle against the Jewish State. Mr. Hill forgot the Democratic Convention of 2012, when the Democrats had such a hard time in forging a positive statement on Israel. He forgot just how many votes it took before the resolution for Israel finally passed, and then it was done in a backroom deal.

During WWII, Herr Roosevelt and his anti-Semites choose to ignore the reality of what is going on in Europe and refused to meet the emissaries from Europe, meet a delegation of Rabbi's from the Vaad Hatzalah. Roosevelt comes from a German family and so di many of his cabinet and generals *(Eisenhower) so they avoided to simply drop one bomb or hand grenade on the railroad tracks to stop the killing of the Jews. The U.S. State Department comprises solely of anti-semties which is a requirement for employment. Hence do you think Hussein Obama any different?

  9. I allways thought and thing that Israel will go alone to Iran, that is why I am against that the US get involved in Syria, let them resolve their own situation, this a Sunnies against Shiites, Hezbollah against Alqaeda, is not only Syria is Lebanon, Irak and Gulf countries, the best is restrain and look as will go farther.

Obama wouldn't know what to do to help Israel. Obama is an incompetent, narcissistic, idiot. Israel does not need a stupid man to stand with them….. all Israel needs is their G-d and HE is their Commander and Chief. Let Syria even think about attacking Israel…. there will be nothing left of the Syrian nation when G-d gets through with it. You don't need the U.S. with Obama as its head. You only need The Warrior King of Israel, He fights your battles for you. L'Shalom

  11. Israel needs to become more independent of the United States. Since 1948, the United States has not been a unconditional supporter of Israel. In fact, most of the time the United States has been unfairly critical of Israel. Yesterday, I watched a you tube video of when Israel was in the embryonic stages of statehood. The Arabs were attacking Israel in every direction. Israel was so young they had nothing, no formal military and were woefully short of supplies and weapons. The U.S. may have recognized Israel as a Jewish state. But, were given no support, even when the U.S. knew that the Arabs were attacking. Somehow Israel was able to stave off the attacks but when fighting finally stopped the U.S. didn't warn the Arabs that any future aggression would be met with American intervention. Instead, they put pressure on Israel to give back hard fought land to the Arabs. A couple days ago, I watched an interview with Dick Cheney on C-Span discussing his new book. The topic of the middle east came up. Cheney mentioned that " thankfully Israel took out Iraq's nuclear facility in 1981". What he failed to mention is that when Israel went to the United States and briefed them on the dyer circumstances, asking for support, the United States did nothing. With no other alternative, Israel had to protect themselves. After the operation that knocked out Saddam Hussein's nuclear capability was carried out, the international community including the United States were livid and highly critical of Israel. When Bill Clinton was president and were conducting "peace talks" between Yitzak Rabin and Arafat, we saw similar pressure as we do today, for Israel to make unwise and unjustified concessions. But, nothing was asked of Arafat, a man who spent his entire career carrying out terrorist attacks and established the PLO whose primary goal was to destroy Israel. Fortunately, Israel was saved from itself by Arafat backing out of the deal. Just like today, Israel was prepared to destroy itself with weak leadership. These are just a few examples that demonstrate how foolish it is for Israel to become overly dependent on any country, including the United States. It is true that Israel is a tiny oasis of sanity in an ocean of insanity known as the middle east and that Israel deserves the support of the U.S. and other nations. But, Israel should never be lulled into a false sense of security thinking that another country will bail them out. The only one that will save Israel, is Israel.

Attention Jewish Leaders: Israel is not part nor parcel of the U.S. we have no responsibility to come to Israel's rescue.

  13. Serge E. Grynkewich says:

True. Israel is a big burden to America.
