Parshat Chukat: The Role of The Snake

Going through all these things twice: The generation of the desert, like Adam, the first man, failed to appreciate the gifts that G-d gives us. Adam blamed the woman G-d gave him for his own eating of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge, and the Israelites in the desert complained about the spiritually refined nourishment known as manna, with which G-d kept them fed for forty years. Is it any wonder that the evil-tongued snake made an appearance in both cases, here being used by G-d as an instrument to exact from Israel a price for their flagrant disregard?

Israel Prize-winning novelist, essayist and playwright A.B. Yehoshua (“Buli”)– author, most recently, of “Ahizat Moledet” (Homeland Lesson) — was called the “Israeli Faulkner” by the New York Times. A left-wing intellectual, he has recently called on Europe to recognize Palestine as a independent state. He joins Yishai to talk about the meaning of Zionism, and give literary depth to the Scroll of Esther. Then, Knesset Insider Jeremy Saltan joins Yishai in-studio to dissect the politics behind the Purim story.

United West Bomb Iran Musical

It’s Purim and Iran’s planning nuclear genocide against Israel. This might be an appropriate Video of the Day. On the other hand, it might not be an appropriate Video of the Day too. It’s tough to tell on Purim.

Across Eastern Europe, more than a million Jews were killed by Nazi paramilitary death squads called “Einsatzgruppen,” and their bodies were thrown into mass graves. Many of these grave sites remained unmentioned and untouched for decades. On the Fast of Esther, Father Desbois joins Yishai to convey a message of Jewish strength. Then, VOI’s Binyamin Nakonechny joins Yishai in-studio to tell stories and play music in preparation for the Purim holiday — and in keeping with the verse from the Book of Esther: “The Jews had light and gladness and joy and honor.”

Please note: The video is not from this year in terms of the specific days the rabbi mentions, but the rest of the content is obviously relevant.

Fred Maroun — a Canadian of Arab origin, who lived in Lebanon until 1984 (including during 10 years of civil war)– supports Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state. He tells Yishai the ironic tale of how Israel brought him back to a relationship with the Arab world, and the sad reality of how pro-Israel Arabs cannot speak freely in Arab countries. Then, Paul Miller — executive director of the Salomon Center and a highly regarded writer and political consultant — joins Yishai from the AIPAC policy conference in Washington, and reports on PM Netanyahu’s speech in preparation for his big Congressional address. Finally, VOI’s Jeremy Saltan join Yishai in-studio for an analysis of Israeli debates and the lead-up to PM Netanyahu’s speech before the US Congress.

US President Barack Obama contends Israel is “safer today than ever before,” says give Iran talks a chance.

Rev. John Counsell is a pastor, a radio show host, a biker and an Israel-lover. Together with one of Ottawa’s top rabbis, he is leading a tour of the Holy Land for his listeners. John joins Yishai to talk about living an inspiring biblical life; hosting a religious, call-in talk-radio show on a secular station in Canada; ministering to bikers; and supporting Israel with all his heart. Then, Yishai hosts Brig. Gen. Avi Yaakovi, recently retired from the Israel Air Force, after flying more than 4,000 hours on an F-16 — thereby setting an Israeli record and becoming part of an exclusive international club consisting of only a few dozen elite pilots. The worsening housing crisis, the worsening Iran crisis and other problems that Israeli politicians can’t seem to solve — and with Knesset elections taking place a mere two years after the previous ones — are causing many Israelis to be cynical about the political process. The voter has a desire to see something different, but will they be disappointed again? Dr. Seth Frantzman, op-ed editor of the Jerusalem Post, joins Yishai in-studio to discuss the state of the Israeli electorate.

How can the most famous man in history also be the most humble? Why are we commanded to remember to destroy the memory of Amalek (Israel’s arch nemesis)? These and other conundrums are the topics of discussion between Rabbi Mike Feuer and Yishai on the segment that gets you ready for Shabbat.

Dr. Ran Baratz — the founding editor of the conservative, Hebrew-language Web magazine MIDA, and the director of the Tikvah Fund’s Political Thought program — joins Yishai in-studio. Baratz analyzes the “new Israeli,” whose identity is formed in a mixed and tolerant religious environment; the rare “new Arab,” who accepts Israel; and PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s efforts to stop Iran’s nuclear ambitions and his call to European Jewry to immigrate to Israel. Then, VOI’s Raoul Wootliff joins Yishai to share audio clips from the latest English-language press event, during which Zionist Union party leader Isaac Herzog shared his vision for an alternative to PM Netanyahu.

This year, as Israel observes the traditional period of national mourning for the destruction of the Beis HaMikdash on Tisha B’Av, it has again been revealed that the Islamic Waqf is carrying out unsupervised work at the Temple Mount, potentially causing irrevocable damage to Judaism’s holiest site.

The study of Jewish history teaches us that throughout the ages, numerous edicts and decrees have prevented the practice of Jewish traditions and religious observance. Yet it has gone almost completely unnoticed that in recent weeks, Jewish rights and freedoms in the Land of Israel, of all places, have once again come under attack.
