Most of us will remember the saga of Hunter Biden’s laptop. Three weeks before the 2020 presidential election, the New York Post reported that the laptop contained e-mails suggesting financial corruption by candidate Biden. However social media blocked links to the story while some news outlets declined to publish it out of a concern – later authoritatively discredited – fed by the Democrats that the e-mails were the product of a Russian disinformation campaign.
The Russian disinformation gambit is now being reprised by Democrats seeking to discredit information damaging to President Obama and former Secretary of State and Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
It is being alleged that President Obama intended to scuttle the FBI’s investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private e-mail server and mishandling of highly classified information during her time as secretary of state and a reported Obama and Hillary Clinton plan to falsely tie Donald Trump to Russia. Misdeeds by the FBI and CIA during the Obama Administration are also prominently featured, including misrepresentations to courts.
The negative information is contained in the newly declassified annex to the 2023 report filed by Russiagate special counsel John H. Durham and is already creating controversy.
An effort to once again stymie publication of information damaging to Democrats with claims of Russian disinformation is reportedly in full swing. Yet Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley is apparently on the case and will be overseeing the inquiries into the allegations. Grassley is a very serious and tough player and it is important to keep in mind this is not some exercise in political payback and we should not allow ourselves to be persuaded that it is, or take the Russia disinformation accusations at face value.
It surely cannot be denied that a lot of high and important public officials did things they shouldn’t have. There were far too many findings by inspectors general and the like to conclude otherwise. Yet we doubt that anyone believes that the full story is out there. In order to restore confidence in our democracy, it is necessary to find out what really happened in what many believe what was a hijacking of our government, so that it can never be repeated.
