More than 1200 police officers were deployed in Arab villages, towns and cities on Sunday, and Israel Police operated on high alert throughout the country.

Clashes also continued between Arab residents of Kfar Qana and Israel Police, with protesters waving Palestinian Authority flags while blocking entrance and access road to the town, setting tires ablaze and hurling stones at police. At least 20 rioters were arrested, including eight minors.

Riots were also reported in Kafr Qasim, and at a police station in Sha’ab, the Israeli flag was removed and replaced by that of the Palestinian Authority.

Israel Police are investigating the incident.

A number of highways were temporarily closed due to rocks, flaming tires or attacks along the roads, including Routes 65, 444 and 754. Two passengers were wounded on an Egged bus traveling from Hadera to the Galilee on Route 65 when the vehicle came under attack from Arabs hurling rocks. Police searched for the attackers but have not yet made an arrests.

Some 30 Arabs placed rocks and blazing tires on Route 754 near Nazareth, Ynet reported, forcing authorities to temporarily close the road in order to clear the obstacles.

Blazing tires created more obstacles on Route 444 near the Taibe Bridge in the “Triangle” area. One arrest was reported by police, as security personnel dispersed rioters.

The outskirts of Moshav Mei Ami were set ablaze by an Arab firebombing (Molotov cocktail). Police stationed in the Arab city of Umm al-Fahm launched an investigation into the incident.

The clashes followed protests by university students in Tel Aviv and Haifa over the death of an armed terrorist who threatened police in a vehicle late last week.

The terrorist, a 22-year-old Israeli Arab, attempted to attack police officers with a knife while they sat in their vehicle, slamming his weapon on the window.

When he was some distance from the vehicle, one of the police officers shot and killed him.
