The first-ever Ethiopian-Israeli has graduated and received his wings along with the rest of his class at Hatzerim Air Force Base in southern Israel.

The cadet, Lieutenant Y, is the first member of his community to graduate the program; he is slated to begin active duty as a combat navigator.

“When I began the course I encountered some prejudice, but it wasn’t different from the type other people face when they enter a new and judging environment,” he told Ynet. “But I later discovered that I was surrounded by ordinary people … and I understood that I have a place in which I can develop and grow.”
