A Metrolink commuter passenger train in southern California derailed in the city of Oxnard at approximately 5:55 am Tuesday morning after hitting a truck stuck at a railroad crossing in Ventura County.

Approximately 30 people were injured — but there were no fatalities — and an unknown number of cars were damaged on the train. At least three cars derailed.

No fatalities were reported by officials at the scene, according to initial information broadcast on CNN, which reported the train was traveling towards Los Angeles.

There is a large Jewish community in that city, including many relatives of American immigrants to Israel.

The truck — a tractor trailer — was stalled on the tracks, according to the report, but it is not yet clear why. The driver of the truck managed to escape his vehicle and was found a short distance away, unhurt, a battalion chief said. He is in custody.
