With 25 minutes to spare before the deadline, Rav Shmuel Eliyahu entered his name into the running for Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem. This puts him head to head with former Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar, who is also in the running.

Rav Eliyahu’s decision puts Bayit Yehudi in a tough position, as they originally planned to support Rav Amar, but Rav Eliyahu is closer to the Bayit Yehudi camp ideologically.
