Folly of 'Stage 1' Thinking

Abbas’ insistence to ditch Washington and ask the United Nations to demand that Israel agree to his demands by 2016 only aggravates the “crisis” in Foggy Bottom, which has not been able to admit that its decades-old refusal to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital has been a disaster.

Instead, it constantly “condemns” Israel, as Psaki did on Wednesday, and chides Abbas for going to the United Nations.

Psaki, helpless in the face of Kerry’s stubbornness to force Abbas’s demand down Israel’s throat, has little to fall back on except to insist that the United States’ concerns are not so much “about what is in the interests of the Palestinian people and the interests of the Israeli people…[but] is about what is in the interest of the United States.”

What exactly is in the interest of the United States?

No one in the Obama administration really has explained that, except to suggest that “two states for two peoples” will make the world a safer place, solve the Iranian nuclear threat, eliminate ISIS, bring peace to Syria, Yemen, Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq and maybe even the Ukraine, and justify Obama’s having received the Nobel Prize for Peace.
