The Israel Defense Forces confirmed Monday that Gaza terrorists launched a rocket during the evening hours.

The projectile exploded in the Mediterranean Sea near the port city of Ashdod, off the southern Israeli shoreline.

The Red Alert rocket alert air raid siren did not activate because the rocket exploded outside Israel and was not deemed a threat.

Residents in southern Israel said they heard explosions, but saw no rockets. There were no reports of physical injuries or property damage.

The IDF said it is investigating the circumstances behind the launch.
