Following the State Comptroller’s report on the 2014 Gaza war, representatives of the bereaved families who lost their dear ones in that war asked Knesset Speaker MK Yuli Edelstein to read before the Knesset plenum their letter regarding the report.

Speaker Edelstein read the full letter, which noted that the families’ wait for the report was difficult, but not nearly as tough as the report’s conclusions.

“The comptroller’s report describes many failures in the performance of the cabinet, the NSA, the GSS, as well as the lack of preparedness for the tunnels, for which no one is accepting responsibility at the peril of seeing them be repeated,” the letter said, adding, “As citizens, we must rely on the prime minister, defense minister, Knesset members and the government in days of peace and war. Members of the Knesset, you are the ones who sent our sons to battle, it is your moral obligation to learn and apply the lessons [of the report].”

“We demand the full implementation of the report’s conclusions, and call on everyone who took part in Operation Protective Edge to accept responsibility,” the letter went on. “We demand that the public be shown a political and military plan to change the procedures and priorities, as well as a resolution of the security situation before the current threat turn into the next war.”

“We deserve answers, we deserve a leadership that accepts responsibility,” the bereaved families’ letter concluded.
