Israel has signed an historic agreement to build a pipeline to supply natural gas to Europe, according to a report broadcast Saturday night by Israel’s Channel 2 television news.

It is expected to be the deepest underwater pipeline, and the longest, in the world.

The initiative was launched by Israeli National Energy and Infrastructure Minister Yuval Steinitz. It was signed after two years on contacts and negotiations between Israel, Italy, Greece and Cyprus with the backing of the European Union.

The project is expected to begin in the next several months, with the goal of natural gas flowing through the pipeline in five years’ time.
