Hungary’s unfinished Holocaust Museum in Budapest, the “House of Fates” has received a new lease on life.
A group of historians has been appointed to a new steering committee for the institution by the Hungarian Jewish Alliance, an Orthodox umbrella congregation of Hungarian Jewry which became the new owner of the museum last September.
The committee, which includes world-renowned Holocaust experts, has formulated a new vision of content for the museum that tells the complex and authentic story of the persecution and Holocaust of Hungary’s Jewish population.
The museum is targeting its efforts towards Hungarian youth in the hopes that as soon as it opens, all high school students in Hungary will be required to visit the museum, according to the museum’s “vision document.”
“The younger generation has no personal relationship to the history of the 20th century nor the story of the Holocaust, and in some cases preliminary knowledge of historical facts are limited,” according to the document. Other target audiences are Jewish and non-Jewish local and international visitors.
