Born on July 29, 1926 in Kosava, Belarus, the 93 year old Torah sage was a leading rabbinic authority in the Lithuanian Jewish world. He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at Bnei Brak’s Mayanei HaYeshua Hospital earlier this month with breathing difficulties. Doctors detected a heart problem later that same day.

The Shas Torah Council Scholars released a statement saying the rabbi was a “survivor from the generation of biblical wisdom. . . The world of Torah and Halakha lost one of the great halachic ajudicators of the generation.”

Rabbi Karelitz helped to establish and headed the Bnei Brak Beis Din (Rabbinical Court) for more than 50 years.
