Hebrew Academy (RASG) Charlotte Rohr Middle School recently kicked off a new curricular program for their students called Minimester. Through this program students were given an opportunity to be immersed in a course that is outside their regular school curriculum. Students were able to choose a syllabus that focused on law, marine biology, medicine, health and fitness, cooking, or art. Each of these studies provided experiences to explore careers in real life settings.

Throughout the week the students were engaged in hands-on activities and participated in various workshops that focused on the course they chose.

The judicial review group had an opportunity to visit the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s offices and watch a criminal court trail. They also prepared for a mock trial with assistant state attorneys.

Students in the marine biology course visited the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine Atmospheric Science to learn about oceanographic and atmospheric research. The group had an opportunity to drag nets through the waters of Key Biscayne to discover sea life of all shapes on sizes.

Other courses gave students equally unforgettable experiences in the fields they chose to explore.

“The minimester was a great way for me to learn and get ideas about what career I may want to pursue,” said 7th grader Kayla Wolfson. “I did the Get Fit, Stay Fit course which helped me learn how to be healthy now and get me in the habit of staying healthy as I get older.”

Andrea Lucero, middle school coordinator said she is “always looking to enhance our middle school program in ways that will engage the students and make learning fun. I’m with the positive feedback we’ve been receiving. Our teachers worked diligently to get the program off and running and its success is due to their hard work.”
