We hope that President Trump’s counterintuitive reluctance to embrace, full bore, the notion of seeking regime change in Iran – despite the spectacularly successful targeting of Iranian nuclear facilities last week – is a function, not of his not knowing better, but of his need to tip toe through the so-called “MAGA civil war” over Iran. That is the debate between the neo-isolationists who fear “nation building” leading to yet another “endless war” and those wishing to capitalize on Iran’s unprecedented vulnerability to take out, once and for all, a regime that has been the foremost sponsor of terrorism around the world. One responsible for the deaths of thousands of Americans – and one that is vowing to continue in that role.

As Politico is reporting, as recently as this past Sunday, President Trump’s top national security officials spent much of the day insisting that his administration doesn’t want to bring about the end of Iran’s government, only its nuclear program.

Yet for his part, President Trump reportedly only went so far as to say “It’s not politically correct to use the term ‘Regime Change,’ but if the current Iranian Regime is unable to MAKE IRAN GREAT AGAIN, why wouldn’t there be a Regime Change??? MIGA!!!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

While the president did not quite call for the ouster of the current regime in Teheran, or say that the U.S. would play any role in overthrowing it, he did seem to undercut what seemed to be a coordinated message from his top advisers that regime change was not something being contemplated.

Of course, the president may be engaging in another ruse of the kind that worked so well on our behalf last week in the run-up to the bunker buster bombings of Iranian nuclear sites. Or maybe, he thinks calling for regime change would appear too presumptuous and risk losing the support of those who had no problem with targeting nuclear locations.

At all events, we hope that the president never loses sight of the fact that what he does now with respect to the continued rule of the Ayatollahs will have an impact on the future of their vision of Islamic triumphalism.
