For the first time since the era of national malaise that followed in the wake of the Vietnam War, the U.S. seems unwilling or unable to play a significant role in world affairs. Bolstering the military and proclaiming, through word and deed, steadfast support for nations and movements willing to challenge the Islamic fundamentalist threat – including Israel in its battle with Hamas – would signal that the U.S. is again ready to lead the forces of civilization against the those who would plunge the world into a new age of medieval darkness.
