Just about any children can go off the derech

There are so many different aspects of this phenomenon that a single op-ed article can barely scratch the surface. The cold fact is that kids go off the derech and end up in the most dire situations. There is not a single problem nor a single solution. Neither is there a single organization for dealing with this issue. There are many. And we are fortunate that’s the case.

All of us need to be involved with this issue. As someone who has been involved for many years, I can testify that there is nothing more rewarding than seeing a young life turned around and given a fresh start. When these young men or women who were formerly at risk speak about where their lives had taken them and the near miraculous nature of their return, it is riveting and there isn’t a dry eye in the house. I’ve seen this at my own Shabbos table when students from Yeshiva Simchas Chaim or one of the other programs dedicated to young people at risk tell of finding caring adults who are dedicated to their futures. A life turned around is a life saved.

Yes, we have some fabulous organizations like Our Place and the aforementioned MASK. But we need total recognition that this is a serious problem. I will continue to advocate for kids at risk and their families. And with Hashem’s help – and yours – we will see progress.
