In the last few weeks, at least two Israeli soldiers have been attacked…not by the enemies of Israel, but by those to whom they have pledged themselves to protect. The leadership of the communities where these soldiers were attacked have, by and large, not stepped forward to demand that this stop and that the guilty parties be brought to justice.
Until this happens – here is my message to them…

לבעלי עסק בשכונות גאולה ומאה שערים היקרים,
לצערי, לא אוכל עוד לתמוך בחנויות שלכם. אני לא יכולה לסכן את חייהם של ילדיי בכניסה לאיזורים מסוכנים. חבל ועצוב. הוצאתי עשרות אלפי שקלים בחנויות שלכם ובמתן צדקה – ברצון לתמוך בכם, בקהילותיכם ובחנויות שלכם. אבל אם חייל צה”ל לא יכול ללכת בבטחה בשכונותיכם, אז גם אני לא יכולה.
אם אתם מרגישים גם כך, אנא שתפו בדף הפייסבוק שלכם. אם אתם מדברים יידיש ויודעים לתרגם את המכתב, אנא עשו זאת. אם אתם גרים קרוב, אנא הדפיסו ותלו את ההודעה קרוב לשכונה (רצוי לא על פחי אשפה כי הם עלולעם לעלות באש בהפגנה הבאה).
הם מדברים עם הידיים….עלינו לדבר עם הארנק. לא אקנה שום דבר בשכונות חרדיות עד שנשמע התנצלות מהמנהיגים החרדיים ודרישה שהמפגעים יסגירו את עצמם.
Dear Merchants in Geula and Mea Shearim,
With regrets, I will no longer be able to support your stores. I can’t risk the lives of my children by entering dangerous areas.
It’s a shame. I’ve spent tens of thousands of NIS there – wanting to support you and your community and your stores.
But if a soldier of Israel cannot walk safely in your neighborhood, than neither can I.
If you feel the same way, please share this. If you speak Yiddish and can translate it, please do. If you live nearby, please print it and tape it to the telephone polls (not the garbage cans because they might burn them next time they have another protest).
They speak with their hands…we should speak with our wallets. I won’t be purchasing anything in those areas until I hear the Haredi leadership apologize and demand that the perpetrators turn themselves in.
