Mass Rally of ‘Jews Against the Internet’ to Pack Citi Field in May

CitiField will be the site of a mass rally of Haredi Jewsgainst the ravages of modern technology
Tens of thousands of Ultra-Orthodox Jews will participate in a huge rally to be held on Sunday evening, May 20, at Citi Field in Queens, New York, to combat the evils of the Internet and the damages caused by advanced electronic devices.
The NY Mets will be playing in Toronto on the same day.
The website JDN cites one of the event organizers who said: “This will be a mass rally never before seen in the history of Orthodox Jewry in the U.S. It will be a gathering of unity of all the Jews living in the U.S., a gathering to disseminate information and a prayer rally for the success of Klal-Israel’s war on the Technology which threatens the sanctity of the homes of Israel.”
The “Gdolei Israel” (leading sages) behind the conference have specifically ordered to schedule it for the eve of Rosh Chodesh Sivan, a day which is considered particularly fortuitous when it comes to children’s education, since the goal of their campaign is to save the generation from the ravages of advanced technology.

It is well known that in recent times through the Internet many serious family-related problems have been created, and it all happens because of it, and something must be done so they won’t be hurt. And since this touches almost everyone, we must assemble together to protect and be protected, and we hope that through this gathering in search of ideas we will be helped from Heaven to save the many, and may it be that we will be successful in encouraging the public not to stumble over this obstacle, and the Lord will guide us in a truthful path. And note that sometimes the suspension of Torah is the very way in which it must be kept.
The letter is signed by Rabbi Aharon Leib Shteinman, Dean of Ponovezh Litze’irim; Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, a highly regarded Bnei-Brak posek; and Rabbi Nissim Karelitz, Chairman of the rabbinical court of Bnei Brak.
According to JDN, the event’s production costs of some $1.5 million were raised from private philanthropists.

May I suggest that the organizers of this rally take their heads out of the sand and do an internet search for Shea Stadium. They will quickly discover that Shea Stadium no longer exists. They can then inform the "untold thousands" who are waiting with bated breath for this event that they really meant CitiField. Of course, the quickest way to disseminate the correct information would be by use of the internet. That way the people the organizers are trying to reach will be able to immediately access the correct information on the laptops, smartphones and/or i-Pads almost all of them own and use (whether they admit it or not).

Your post proves how negative you are. The article does not quote the organizers saying anything about the event taking place in Shea. Maybe you should take your head out of the sand and learn to read. People try and do good things and you just sit there posting negativity. Keep it up. It will get you very far in this world.

You are right, of course. Since the event only takes place in three weeks, I went looking for an illustration image, and short of yet another picture of Shea Stadium (Citi Field) which is kind of boring, I went with a guy in a shteimel in front of Intel.
Israel should focus more on getting rid of porn and slave traders than the internet.

As a Jewish paper that understands the issues in our community, I don t believe it is fair for the Jewish Press to post the picture of the protest at Intel in Israel along with this article. By posting such a misleading photo, the JP is putting itself in the same class as the liberal media. This event is in no way an extremist protest against the internet. Rather, it is about protecting the Jewish family. Our children, wives, and husbands are at risk and we are in much need of inspiration to combat this evil giant.
I'm not to impressed with the JP. Its not the first time, and it probably wont be the last. "Its not personal, just business." Just ask Rupert Murdoch. I am sure he will agree.
I defy you to find a cite in the article where the JP writes the event is, as you put it, “an extremist protest against the internet.” The piece is a translation of a story in a Hatredi website, plus translation of one of several ads calling on the Haredi public to assemble. You are assigning “Liberal” attitudes to a completely neutral story. All I can conclude from this is that you are projecting your own attitude on the item.
As to the image: it illustrates well the notion of Haredi people against computer technology. The caption states that it’s an illustration. What did you want us to post? The picture of a person having strong internal objections to Technology?
We care very much about the influence of the Internet, which is why we daily walk the tight rope between all the news that’s out there and our desire to maintain our G rating. We may fail on occasion, but this one is not one of those times.

And how did the organizers of "Jews Against the Internet" notify everyone of the rally? Twitter, Facebook, email and even the internet version of The Jewish Press. Thank God for the internet or the stadium would be empty.

I don't share the anti-internet view, but I understand their point and they are entitled to their opinion. I find it ironic though that a group of law abiding people rent a stadium with private funds to have a rally to express their opinion and we have no shortage of people trying to poke fun at them. But you have thousands of people (OWS) breaking the law to stop you and me from going to work and somehow many people defend their right to protest – even when it is very likely to lead to violence.
So Occupy Wall Street is ok with many people, but Rabbis trying to remind us all of biblical values is somehow a problem.
I think we should all just learn to respect each others views. Again, I don't share their views and won't be at Citifield unless my son drags me to a ballgame – but I understand and respect where they are coming from. Now the guys trying to shutdown the subway and threatening to overrun a police station, in my view, deserve the real criticism.
I'm sorry, but no, I will not respect the views of a group that so blatantly attacks freedom of speech and expression. They don't deserve my respect simply because they deem themselves authorities.
And you claim they represent biblical values? Isn't the Lakewood community where many of these esteemed Rebbes reside the center of a sexual abuse scandal? Sounds like real great Torah values there.
