A registered sex offender who delivered milk to a summer camp for Brooklyn Orthodox Jewish boys, from was arrested Wednesday, one week after he was caught by hidden cameras breaking into the buildings where the children slept, state police told the NY Post.
Yoel Oberlander, 31, of Monsey, was charged with trespassing. He was being held in the Sullivan County jail on $5,500 bail.
“He knowingly entered and unlawfully remained in the bunk, the sleeping quarters of the boys,” said State Police Capt. Joseph Tripodo.
But Tripodo added that the investigation found “no allegation of sexual abuse.”
Oberlander, who drives a truck for the Golden Taste kosher-food company, was convicted in 2002 of sexually abusing an 11-year-old girl in Rockland County.
In 2008 he tried to challenge a Rockland County law that limited the areas where sex offenders could live. His challenge failed.
A spokesman for the camp, E. David Scharf, said Oberlander was caught “going in and out of the sleeping quarters” on security cameras in the halls, but confirmed that he did not have “enough time to commit an act of molestation.”
Survivors for Justice, an advocacy group, first alerted police early Thursday a week ago after receiving reports that boys had been touched by an intruder, who warned them not to call their parents.
Camp directors waited about 35 hours before calling a criminal lawyer, who advised them to alert authorities.
“An immediate report would have protected kids in other camps where this driver was making deliveries that day and the next,” SFJ spokesman Ben Hirsch complained to the Post. “We hope the children were not pressured into changing their stories.”
