Trump, Iran, Fordow, and Korach

In the editorial “Helping Israel Helps the U.S. – Trump Should Make That Clear” (June 20), The Jewish Press editorial staff expressed concern that President Trump was wavering in his resolve to eliminate Iran’s ability to manufacture a nuclear bomb.

But was Trump vacillating about directly involving the U.S. in the Israeli-Iran conflict due to uncertainty, or part of a plan? Trump is rarely hesitant in his actions. He is very decisive, sometimes almost on the brink of recklessness. He is also a shrewd negotiator and has a surprising grasp of history. I would therefore like to offer as an alternate possibility for his actions that Trump was only stalling for time in order to put all the pieces together for a very complex operation.

We have now seen that as a result of the meticulous preparation and deception, the mission was executed in an outstanding manner and achieved its goal with brilliant success.

There is also a second aspect of the raid that is an extraordinary story in its own right. Consider the following:

This Shabbat at Mincha we started reading next week’s parsha, Korach, which describes Korach and his henchmen rebelling against Moshe and Aaron and thereby experiencing Hashem’s punishment.

At exactly the same moment that the baal koreh was starting to read Korach, U.S. B-2 bombers were starting to drop bunker-busting bombs on Iran’s nuclear facilities in Fordow. In both cases the earth opened up and swallowed the culprits. In the Torah it was Korach and his followers, and in Iran it was the nuclear facilities and the scientists working there.

Words like coincidence, amazing, or incredible, or phrases like “Truth is stranger than fiction” or “You can’t make this stuff up” don’t quite seem to capture the moment. The only word that comes close is “miraculous,” and even this seems like an understatement, given the global impact of this week’s event.

I will leave it to much smarter Torah scholars to explain this unbelievable confluence of events, 3,000 years apart, as my simple mind still cannot absorb it.

Shame On Piers Morgan

Alan Zeitlin’s article regarding Piers Morgan was keenly on point (“Piers Morgan Has Thrown Israel Under the Bus; Should Advocates Still Appear on His Show?” June 20).

Morgan’s treatment of Natasha Hausdorff was disrespectful and despicable. It was one of the most unprofessional displays of TV hosting that I have ever witnessed. He should be unequivocally taken to task for the pathetic, rude, and condescending conduct toward a distinguished pro-Israel attorney. Furthermore, I would advocate legal action against him and his producers for slandering his guest.

Morgan has devolved into darkness and ugliness with his rapidly developing hatred for Israel and the Jews. He has completely lost sight of the facts on the ground and has willingly fallen victim to Islamo-Nazi propaganda. And he has hosted on his program vile ignorant antisemites such as Cenk Ugyur and others and allows them to spew slanted lies about Israel and Jews.

We need more people like Iranian firebrand Elica Le Bon and others to forcefully challenge Piers and his clueless malevolent guests. She exhibited quite a passionate and well-presented response to a guest on the show that claimed Israel was committing genocide that left both the guest and Morgan stunned into silence. So, yes, I do believe qualified individuals should appear on his show with the guarantee that he will let them fully articulate their positions.

May Hashem protect and usher in times of peace and tranquility via Moshiach speedily in our days without trials and tribulations.

The U.S. Military’s Indebtedness To Jews

Re: “Trump: U.S. Bombs Three Iranian Nuclear Sites” (www.JewishPress.com):

There are Americans denouncing the U.S. for bombing Iran’s nuclear sites in support of Israel. It is the first time the U.S. is actively fighting with Israel against its enemy, although with no boots on the ground.

You could call this a reward now being repaid to the Jews after 80 years.

In the Second World War, a hugely disproportionate number of brilliant Jewish scientists were involved in the Manhattan Project, which led to the development of the atomic bomb. The wildly successful film Oppenheimer in 2023 was based on the life of Jewish physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, the head of the Los Alamos Laboratory.

The atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki saved the lives of thousands of American soldiers, sailors, and marines, who would have been killed had they invaded Japan.

In 1948, President Truman refused to provide weapons for Israel’s existential fight against the Arabs. Had Israel received them, it would have captured the West Bank and cleared out the enemy population from it. There would be no endless talk today of “occupied territory.” In sharp contrast, under Truman and President Eisenhower, the Americans sacrificed so much blood and treasure in the Korean War.

Better late than never for America to reward Israel for the invaluable Jewish contribution to the defeat of fascist Japan and for the invention of the drone by American-Israeli Abraham Karem, an important weapon in America’s modern military arsenal.

Boosting An Inspiring Biography

This past Shabbos I was greeted in shul by several mispallelim who asked me if I’d seen the review of Always On Call (which I co-wrote with Mrs. Tzippy Basch) (“A Renaissance Doctor in the Washington Heights Community,” June 20).

I would like to thank Chaim Yehuda Meyer on behalf of Mrs. Basch and myself for your very eloquent and complimentary review of the biography which, as you noted, took more than a dozen years to put together. I think you really captured the essence of Dr. Moller’s amazing personality and tzidkus, and explained why he stands (even almost a half-century after his passing) as a true role model for all who hope to combine Torah mastery, a devotion to chesed, and a professional livelihood in a truly successful manner. So thank you very much for alerting those who had not yet read the book to the magnificence of this true gadol.

Meyer mentioned his family background in your article, and it was very gratifying to hear that he is the grandson of the fabled Manny Meyer, z”l, whom I knew well as both a great photographer and a community leader and protector; the nephew of Rabbi Mendy Meyer, who helped us so much with this book; and the son of Marc Hal Meyer, whom I remember teaching English to when he was a 7th grader at Yeshiva Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch over 50 years ago.

Thank you again, Chaim Yehuda Meyer, for doing such a great job of summarizing Dr. Moller’s gadlus, and also for helping to publicize the book.
