Even as Hashem paves the way for the people’s exile, he paves the way for their return. The externally-facing Jew, the marketer extraordinaire, is developed in the person of Joseph. But so is the internal leader, the taker of responsibility. Even as the nation becomes dependent on the power of others, it learns the traits necessary to stand on its own feet.

Today, we have returned to our land. But we are stuck between worlds. Today ,we need both sorts of leaders. We need those who can market to the world outside and we need those who can lead by taking responsibility and inspiring others through their own example.

G-d willing, we can find our own generation’s versions of Yosef and Yehudah.
