NYPD officers lead the procession of mourners at the funeral for Detective Wenjian Liu in Brooklyn.

DeBlasio’s final attempt to reach out and convince police of his good intentions came with a quote from Buddah: “Resolutely train yourselves to attain peace… There have always been times when the harmony of the city has been challenged,” he said. “The past few weeks have been one of those times. Let us return to mutual understanding and living in harmony, strengthening the bonds that unite us, and living in peace.”

None of it impressed anyone. “Even the cops from other states turned their backs,” said an out-of-state officer who asked that his name not be used. “They know the deal, you know?”
