Parshas Emor and the associated haftorah present the role of the priest and rabbi to provide Torah guided direction, horaah, to the Jewish people. He must be honest and careful to ensure that the answers he provides are correct from the perspectives of past, present and future. Our lives are enhanced by adhering to the laws of the Torah. The kohanim, and the rabbis and leaders who carry on their role, are shomrim, guards and protectors, of our heritage and legacy. They must comply with the responsibilities of the shomer, to protect and safeguard that with which they have been entrusted. The shomer must have the vision to foresee the potential dangers that may arise to threaten the safety of the entrusted object. The rabbis and leaders of the generation are shomrim of Judaism for the subsequent generations. They must protect it to ensure that it is transmitted safely, correctly and in its entirety.
