Police in the northern Galilee city of Galilee raided a home in an Arab village this week and recovered 300 coins and artifacts, some of them dating back to the Hellenistic and Roman periods 2,000 years ago.

The stolen cache included arrowheads, glassware, oil lamp fillers. One glass jar was from the Byzantine period.

Nir Distelfeld of  the Israel Antiquities Authority’s Prevention Robbery unit said, “The use of metal detectors allows thieves to steal artifacts and prevents experts from using the findings to complete the puzzle of our past.”

Police questioned suspects under warning and released them on bail. One of the suspects admitted he took coins from various places near the village.
