Seismic Zionism at Summer Camp

Jewish summer camp

This program, the Goodman Camping Initiative, is aimed at enhancing Israel education in the camp community. Adam Stewart, the program director, explained that one element of the program addresses campus advocacy with college-age counselors. “We’re really excited to see this program implemented,” he said.

The program will train counselors to use modern history to communicate personal connections to Israel. “The curriculum database is available as iPhone and Android apps,” he shared, so counselors can use material in the field.

The waves of Zionist sentimentalism which pervade these summer camps are seismic. Students who choose to spend their summers as camp counselors and lifeguards often return to the university setting as empowered leaders. The Jewish camping movement, in its array of forms, prioritizes and succeeds in instilling deep responsibility to the Jewish state, among its campers and staff, beneficially affecting pro-Israel campus activism.
