If the land of Israel may no longer work on such a principle, there are still at least two things we can take with us from this. The first is that we should want such Divine feedback to return to our very special homeland. The other is that, in the meantime, we should seek whatever indicators we can to check how we are doing ethically and spiritually, and take the appropriate measures needed to improve. With Elul around the corner, this is not such a bad thing.
