The terrorist, whose identity has not been released by authorities, did not survive the rescue operation that freed the Reform congregation’s Rabbi Charlie Cytron-Walker and two others after an 11-hour ordeal. One hostage had been released several hours earlier.

A spokesperson for the British foreign office said its staff are “aware of the death of a British man in Texas and are in contact with the local authorities.”

The FBI is liaising with the British Metropolitan Police in its investigation of the attack.

It is not yet clear whether the terrorist was shot by law enforcement personnel or died by his own hand.
