Although some Jews returned to the lands they were born in, most of these immigrants stayed and became known, collectively, as the Old Yishuv. And even though Mashiach had not yet come, by the 1870s they could boast of at least one miraculous accomplishment: For the first time since the destruction of the Second Temple there were more Jews living in Jerusalem than the city’s non-Jewish population.
