The Torah tells us, “Each man by his flag according to the insignias of their father’s house” (Bamidbar 2:2). The word degel – flag or banner – is more than a tribal marker; it represents each soul’s unique path and spiritual purpose.
According to the Baal Shem Tov, every individual carries a divine spark and mission – their own inner degel. Healing begins when we reconnect with this inner identity. Just as the tribes camped in harmony, each beneath their distinct banner, so too each soul contributed to the wholeness of creation by embracing its authentic role.
In today’s world, many suffer from emotional disorientation, forgetting who they are or trying to mimic others. The Baal Shem Tov teaches that the greatest joy and clarity come when a person lifts their soul’s degel high – reclaiming their unique light, even after pain or exile.
From a healing perspective, degel invites us to:
- Celebrate our individuality.
- Heal the parts of us that felt unseen.
- Stand tall in our spiritual truth, even when the world pulls us down.
When one person raises their degel with courage, it inspires others to do the same. In this way, we journey not alone, but together – each soul a banner of divine beauty, waving in unity toward redemption.
