It can be difficult to take care of your hair during the summer. From constant exposure to chlorine to the extreme humidity, summertime is especially rough on my hair and I’m sure a lot of you can relate. Over the years, I’ve learned some tricks to protect my hair during the humid summer months; I thought I would share them with you.

  1. Before you head to the pool, dampen your hair and apply conditioner. Make sure not to rinse it out! It may seem counter intuitive to wash your hair before a swim, but doing so will keep a great deal of chlorine from being absorbed.
  1. Don’t be afraid to get liberal with the conditioner. When you’re in the shower, make sure to use plenty of conditioner – especially on the ends – and leave it in for 3-5 minutes before rinsing.

If you have dry hair, try a hair mask instead of conditioner. My favorite is one by Amika.

You can step the conditioning up even further by using a leave-in-conditioner after a shower as well.

  1. I know this can be hard, especially as it can get really hot during the summer, but try not to wash your hair daily. Washing your hair daily strips your hair of its natural oils, which leads to more dryness and breakage. I’m guilty of washing my hair a lot more often during the summer, but it’s something to consider trying to keep your hair healthy!
  1. If you can’t keep the poofiness at bay, summer is the perfect time to rock the braided styles! Not only will it feel cooler having your hair off your neck, but it’ll look really cute as well. If you don’t know how to make braids, you’d be surprised by what you can learn on YouTube. But be patient as it will take some practice!
