Israeli archaeologist Eli Shukron is seen going down a ladder at the excavation site of a water reservoir dating back to the First Temple period, which has been discovered in Jerusalem. The water system was discovered during an excavation of a Second Temple period sewage system that ran below Jerusalem’s main drag back in the days of Juda Maccabee.
Over the past century, archeological discoveries have been showing, dig by amazing dig, how the stories in the Jewish Bible correspond to real places and things, hidden in the earth so we would come and unearth them, bit by bit.
It’s as if we couldn’t handle it if the entire Bible came alive for us all at once, so we only get to reveal it in tiny, manageable segments.
Maybe that’s how the grander concept of Hester Panim, the hidden “face” of God works. Experience by experience, revelation by revelation, we start realizing the universe is being run by a divine power, outside our understanding but very much there.
