The US Embassy in Syria has been shut down, and all US embassy staff and family have been evacuated from the country.
In addition, the US has issued an updated travel warning urging its citizens to avoid travel to Syria.
In other news, Syrian embassies around the world bore the brunt of the outrage over the violent 11-month crackdown that has left at least 6000 people dead. The violence engulfed Syrian embassies in Australia, Britain, Egypt, Kuwait and Greece, and riot police came out in force to quell the tensions.
