Nerve-wracking, exciting, and really hard is the way that fifth grader Jack Benveniste-Plitt described his experience as the Hebrew Academy elementary school representative at the Miami Herald’s 72nd Annual Spelling Bee competition on March 6 at Jungle Island.
Jack’s hard work really paid off, as he placed 2nd out of 196 4th and 5th grade contestants from all over Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties.
Jack, who has represented the school two years in a row (by winning the class bees), attributes his success to being well prepared. “I studied a lot and then my dad tested me on the words and I figured out the words I had to focus on.”
Although he spent a lot of free time studying, Jack also balanced schoolwork, playing on the Little Warrior basketball team, and taking guitar lessons.
What’s next for Jack? “I’m going to Disney World to celebrate!” he exclaimed.Shelley Benveniste
