“As we all know, however, it is in the nature of things that they do not change suddenly. Thus, day does not immediately follow night: it does not become totally bright immediately. Instead, the darkness slowly begins to lift at dawn and the light gradually fills the sky. This is so because a sudden change might harm us.

“It is the same with the rav and the congregation. If the people suddenly moved from that which is Hashem’s to that which is for themselves, the change might be harmful. Instead, the congregation goes through a transition – something that is neither fully Hashem’s nor man’s. That is the rav. For if the rav were completely for Hashem, he would study Torah all the time. If he were fully man’s he should get a better salary. Since he is in neither category, the people use him as a transition phase on the holiday…”
