The United States Senate vote unanimously on Thursday to recognize the genocide of Armenians a century ago, Reuters reported.

The resolution asserts that it is US policy to commemorate as genocide the killing of 1.5 million Armenians by the Ottoman Empire from 1915 to 1923. The Ottoman Empire was based in present-day Turkey.

The move infuriated the Turkish government which condemned the measure, warning it would not help improve relations with the United States.

Relations are already strained between the two NATO allies with friction over Ankara’s policy over Syria and its purchase of the Russian S-400 anti-missile defense system.
