The IDF, using an advanced method, on Saturday located a terror tunnel dug by the Hamas which infiltrated into Israel from the Khan Yunis area in the southern Gaza Strip, the IDF Spokesperson’s office announced on Sunday.

According to the announcement, the operation, which was carried out by the IDF Southern Command, was a necessary defensive action to prevent harm to civilians and soldiers.

The tunnel was identified several weeks ago with a unique method combining technology, intelligence and operational capability developed by the IDF. It is the second terror tunnel neutralized in recent weeks.

Locating terror tunnels is part of an extensive effort of the IDF since the 2014 Gaza War, to locate underground infrastructure.

The IDF Spokesperson noted that digging the tunnel is a flagrant violation of Israeli sovereignty, an unacceptable situation which was behind the IDF move to neutralize. It added that Hamas is the authority governing the Gaza Strip and as such is responsible for everything happening there.

“The IDF will continue to take all the measures at its disposal above and below the ground to prevent attempts to harm the residents of the State of Israel,” the announcement concluded.
