Driving through the waves of rubble and the skeletal remains of homes across Gaza offers a stark view of the IDF’s operations in the Strip. A broader perspective comes from the geographic information system, which reveals a more comprehensive picture: entire areas like the Netzarim Corridor, the Philadelphi Corridor, Rafah, northern Gaza, and the buffer zone—comprising roughly two-thirds of Gaza—have been completely leveled. Entire neighborhoods that once stood there have vanished, turning into a moonscape.

But the IDF is not done, and won’t be done until the threats that still emanate from under the ruins are eliminated.

After a year and eight months of intense fighting in Gaza, the scale of destruction is staggering. In recent days, the IDF has begun clearing the remains of buildings and structures across the Gaza Strip. According to the military, this operation aims to prevent terrorists from using the ruins as cover or launching points for attacks against Israeli forces still maneuvering in the area.

To carry out the task, the IDF has enlisted a large number of civilian demolition trucks and their crews. These teams are now active in several parts of the Strip, tearing down thousands of buildings already damaged or destroyed during the prolonged conflict. The IDF acknowledges that Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants have increasingly turned to guerrilla tactics, attempting to shadow Israeli troops and exploit the rubble for ambushes.

Terrorist operatives have adopted tactics that involve infiltrating destroyed buildings—sometimes emerging directly from tunnel shafts—to conceal themselves among the rubble. Within these ruins, they carve out hidden spaces, shielded from IDF forces, surveillance equipment, and drones. From these makeshift hideouts, they prepare and launch attacks against Israeli troops at opportune moments.

To counter this threat, the IDF Southern Command has implemented a strategy to neutralize these hiding spots. In areas where the IDF is active, heavy machinery has been deployed to crush the remnants of destroyed buildings into gravel. An IDF spokesperson confirmed the operation, emphasizing that the objective is to protect soldiers by denying terrorists the ability to use the rubble as cover or to establish infrastructure for attacks.
