The Guardian’s Continuing Obsession with Mordechai Vanunu

Is there really any mystery as to why Vanunu is so admired by the Guardian?
Mordechai Vanunu

Mordechai Vanunu

In 1985 Mordechai Vanunu left his job as a technician at Israel’s nuclear installation in Dimona.  Before leaving, however, he stole several rolls of film about the facility, which he then used to help the U.K. Sunday Times write a story that purported to expose Israel’s nuclear weapons program.

Vanunu was convicted of treason and espionage in 1988 and was released after serving 18 years in prison.  After his release, he exclaimed that he was proud of what he did.

Vanunu is still subject to travel restrictions (and other limitations) as he continues to be considered a serious danger to Israeli security owing to the fact that he holds state secrets that have not yet been published and which he reportedly said he would reveal.  Israeli courts have upheld the legitimacy of the state’s concerns, ruling that Vanunu has not changed his ways and has “repeatedly violated their injunctions” by maintaining ties and contact with the media and other parties.

Naturally, Vanunu is something of a cause celeb at the Guardian, which has published no less than 75 separate pieces (reports and commentary) on the convicted Israeli felon, including an official editorial lauding him, entitled “In Praise of…Mordechai Vanunu.”

The latest Guardian entry is a boilerplate pro-Vanunu letter-to-the-editor entitled “Mordechai Vanunu’s Suffering,” April 19, and is signed by the usual cast of U.K. anti-Zionists, including several Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) “Patrons”: Tony Benn (PSC Patron), Ben Birnberg (War on Want), Julie Christie (PSC Patron), Jeremy Corbyn MP (PSC Patron), Kate Hudson (Stop the War Coalition), Bruce Kent (PSC Patron), and Roger Lloyd-Pack (who played Trigger in BBC’s “Only Fools and Horses”).

In a 2004 interview with Amy Goodman, published at the extremist site CounterPunch, Vanunu accused the Israeli government not only of unjustly imprisoning one man, but of “betraying all of humanity and the world.”

Is there really any mystery as to why Vanunu is so admired by the Guardian?

  1. Jef Vermaere says:

Vanunu was a prisoner of conscience: in exposing the illegal nuclear program of Israel, he acted as a cosmopolitan citizen, in support of global safety. Israel is simply violating UN-rules on non-prolifiration of nuclear weapons; and doing so it is threatening world peace. Further on Israel violates the human rights of Vanunu as an individual by forbidding him to leave the country. What is left of rule of law in the state of Israel?

  2. Ward Van Nieuwenbergh says:

Het blijft wraakroepend dat Israël alle VN-resoluties aan haar laars lapt, en ondertussen de internationale gemeenschap (what's in a name) de andere kant opkijkt.

  3. Florence Eaise says:

Vanunu is ahero- whistle blowers must be protected! Free Vanunu

  4. David Evans says:

Exposing truth isn't antiSemitism. It's merely exposing truth.

  5. John Goss says:

How can anybody imprison a man for telling the truth. It is the bad media that distorts the truth that is culpable in this case, and MOSSAD of course. Secret Services should be abolished world wide. Nearly all the harm in society is caused by them. Pleas let Mordechai, a Christian, come to a Christian country.

  6. Charlie Pottins says:

Shimon Peres introduced nuclear weapons to the Middle East and ended with a Peace Prize. Vanunu got prison because he warned against this menace and has continued to warn against nuclear weapons in the Middle East, while Israeli leaders are using allegations that Iran has entered the race to step up war threats. Which Israeli was really irresponsible, and who should really deserve the peace prize?

  8. Within days of the announcement for 2009’s Nobel Peace Prize, Vanunu declined the honor in a letter to the Nobel Peace Prize Committee in Oslo:

"I am asking the committee to remove my name from the nominations…I cannot be part of a list of laureates that includes Simon Peres…Peres established and developed the atomic weapon program in Dimona in Israel…Peres was the man who ordered [my] kidnapping…he continues to oppose my freedom and release…WHAT I WANT IS FREEDOM AND ONLY FREEDOM….FREEDOM AND ONLY FREEDOM I NEED NOW."

On October 2, 2009, The Washington Times reported that "Obama agrees to keep Israel's nukes secret [and] reaffirmed a 4-decade-old secret understanding that has allowed Israel to keep a nuclear arsenal without opening it to international inspections."

I was researching and writing an historical fiction when I met Vanunu in 2005. I became a reporter because he told me:

"President Kennedy tried to stop Israel from building atomic weapons. Prime Minister Ben Guirion said, 'The nuclear reactor is only for peace."

"Kennedy insisted on an open internal inspection. He wrote letters demanding that Ben Guirion open up the Dimona for inspection.

"When Johnson became president, he made an agreement with Israel that two senators would come every year to inspect. Before the senators would visit, the Israelis would build a wall to block the underground elevators and stairways. From 1963 to ’69, the senators came, but they never knew about the wall that hid the rest of the Dimona from them.

"Nixon stopped the inspections and agreed to ignore the situation. As a result, Israel increased production. In 1986, there were over two hundred bombs. Today, they may have enough plutonium for ten bombs a year."

On April 5, 2009, President Obama stood on the world stage in Prague and admitted, "As the only nuclear power to have used a nuclear weapon, the United States has a moral responsibility to act…When we fail to pursue peace, then it stays forever beyond our grasp. We know the path when we choose fear over hope. To denounce or shrug off a call for cooperation is an easy but also cowardly thing to do. That’s how wars begin. That’s where human progress ends…the voices of peace and progress must be raised together…Human destiny will be what we make of it…Words must mean something."

27 years ago Vanunu wrote from Ashkelon Prison:

“The passive acceptance and complacency with regard to the existence of nuclear weapons anywhere on earth is the disease of society today.

“This struggle is not only a legitimate one – it is a moral, inescapable struggle…no government, not even the most democratic, can force us to live under this threat. No state in the world can offer any kind of security against this menace of a nuclear holocaust, or guarantee to prevent it.

“Already now there are enough nuclear missiles to destroy the world many times over. This issue should unite us all, because that is our real enemy.

“Any country, which manufactures and stocks nuclear weapons, is first of all endangering its own citizens. This is why the citizens must confront their government and warn it that it has no right to expose them to this danger. Because, in effect, the citizens are being held hostage by their own government, just as if they have been hijacked and deprived of their freedom and threatened.

“Indeed, when governments develop nuclear weapons without the consent of their citizens – and this is true in most cases – they are violating the basic rights of their citizens, the basic right not to live under constant threat of annihilation.

“Is any government qualified and authorized to produce such weapons.”

In April 1999, thirty-six members of the US House of Representatives signed a letter calling for Mordechai Vanunu's release from prison because they believed "we have a duty to stand up for men and women like Mordechai Vanunu who dare to articulate a brighter vision for humanity."

President Clinton responded with a public statement expressing concern for Vanunu and the need for Israel and other non-parties to the Non-Proliferation Treaty to adhere to it and accept IAEA safeguards.

Many voices of peace and progress have been raised over the years and all that has been lacking is the political will to do the right-meaning correct things!

  10. Adam Levick says:

I've been silent because I don't take anti-Zionists who promote antisemitic websites seriously. I glanced at your site and noticed you seem to like the hate site 'Veterans Today'. Enough info for me.

  11. Hi again 'The Jewish Press' and Adam Levick! WHY are you so silent when the facts are so clear?
VANUNU did nothing but TELL THE TRUTH and to this day Israel denies his RIGHT to fade into the world instead of continuing to make history.
KEEP up with Vanunu on his YouTube Channel and know that by the end of April he is to learn if Israel will let him leave the country, or cancel his Israeli citizenship:

  12. Vanunu'kidnapping was well described in Eric Salerno' book "Mossad base Italia". His case was a little similar to the egyptian imam kidnapping in Milan by Cia average 10 yeras ago. Both cases were free of charge for the authors. Just the second one's italian secret service's responibles are under trail. Americans were graced by president Napolitano …

  13. Thanks for that and did you know that Vanunu told me, "All the secrets I had were published in 1989 in an important book, by [Nuclear Physicist] Frank Barnaby, The Invisible Bomb: Nuclear Arms Race in the Middle East."

In 1986-7, Barnaby testified at Vanunu's closed door trial, "I found Vanunu very straightforward about his motives for violating Israel's secrecy laws he explained to me that he believed that both the Israeli and the world public had the right to know about the information he passed on. He seemed to me to be acting ideologically.

"Israel's political leaders have, he said, consistently lied about Israel's nuclear-weapons programme and he found this unacceptable in a democracy. The knowledge that Vanunu had about Israel's nuclear weapons, about the operations at Dimona, and about security at Dimona could not be of any use to anyone today. He left Dimona in October 1985."

It is way past time for Vanunu to be allowed the right to fly from Tel Aviv.

It is way past time for Americans to comprehend the depth of US and Israeli Nuclear Deceptions

  14. Heleen Witte says:

I admire people like Mordechai Vanunu, because they stand up for justice. He's a hero!

  15. People with a conscience! :-)

  16. PLEASE join and SHARE the International FB Cause dedicated to HELP FREE VANUNU

  17. Vanunu's rights should not be limited. If he does something unlawful, only in that case he shall be judged by a fair and impartial trial. As long as he doesn't commit any recognizable penal offence, his rights should not be questioned.

  18. Kristian Flem says:

Is it wrong to expose a lie? Well then go ahead, you certainly won't get any star in my book…

  19. Hi Jewish press. MVJC did the only right thing to do, when he discovered, that his work was a part of making a nuclear bomb. Israel denied having any, but the truth was grusom. I hate nuclear weapons! Just see how much damage the bombs that have been used have done. Free Vanunu 2013!

  20. John Power says:

Israel is an Illegal Zionist Apartheid State that should not Exist and is in an Occupation of Palestine.Added to that it is Illegalling keeping Mordechai Vanunu prisoner when he has done his prison term that he should not have done in the first place, now they are keeping hime as a prisoner in Israel and wont let him leave. Israel has taken over where the Nazis have stopped and become a Terror Regime. The Eyes of the World are watching you Israel and are keeping up the Boycott of your Goods for the Injustices meted out to the Palestinians and also this man Vanunu.

  21. Paul Frank says:

Mr. Mordechai Vanunu has lived the values of Judaism, which is more than I can say for this publication. Possibly you should consider a name change? "The Mindless Zionists" would work…

  22. The true threat to the world are the US people who helped Israel develop their nuclear WMD. We [I'm including myself and all US taxpayers] should have never allowed our money to be used in this way. And it continues–abut $6US million per day–or about $8,000 in the two minutes that it took me to write this.

  23. Thanks for that! I add it is US policy that is at the root of what endangers this homeland–blind allegiance to everything Israel desires but blind eyes to war crimes and denial of human rights.
THE MEDIA is most culpable in keeping Americans un-educated and i am sad to report that although 25 MSM Outlets requested a copy of my latest book-"Vanunu’s WAIT for Liberty: Remembering the USS LIBERTY and MY Life as a Candidate of Conscience for the US HOUSE 2012" NOT ONE has reported on Vanunu's ongoing saga………

  24. Alex Kant says:

We are also sending money to Egypt while they are killing Coptic Christians.

  25. As an affiliate of CAMERA, perhaps the author can fill us in oon the details of CAMERAs attempt to clandestinely place its own members on Wikipedias panel of judges overlooking the neutrality and acceptability of info placed in various articles by others. That is until they got caught red-handed.
