Paige flew his own plane to many of the sites. One of his other hobbies was photography and he did his own developing in a well-equipped dark room. His hands were as adept at mixing chemicals as they were mixing pitches on the mound.

So this week drink a l’chaim to the memory of Satchel Paige (who died on June 8, 1982), and don’t forget the important part played Hank Greenberg (who passed away Sept. 4, 1986) in helping to integrate Major League Baseball.
