A friend who’s learning Perek Chelek (the 11th chapter in tractate Sanhedrin, added by the Rabbis largely as a response to Christian challenges), called me this morning, excited over a famous statement made by the Amora Shmuel (165-257 CE): “The only difference between this world and the time of Meshiach is our bondage to the gentile kingdoms.”

I told him that was elementary stuff, and cited Maimonides, who includes Shmuel’s idea in his opus dealing with the body of laws regarding Jewish kings. He said: Why don’t you write about it? I said, It’s been written about, a lot. So he said, Do it again, it wouldn’t hurt.

According to Maimonides (Hayad Hachazaka, Laws of Kings and their wars, translation by Chabad.org), there are three mitzvot the Jews must fulfill upon entering Eretz Israel, and I believe he means whether as the original invaders of Canaan, or as a nation returning from millennia of exile. The first among those mitzvot is to choose a king.

Ideally, the king must be a descendant of King David, appointed by the Sanhedrin of 70 sages and anointed with sacred oil. But even though the kingship was primarily given to David and one of his descendents will eventually be serving as king, other options exist.

If a prophet appoints a king from another tribe of Israel, and if that king follows the path of Torah and mitzvot and fights the wars of God, he is considered a legitimate king, and all the commandments associated with the monarchy apply to him.

Here is how Maimonides defines the role of a King of Israel:

“In all matters, his deeds shall be for the sake of heaven. His purpose and intent shall be to elevate the true faith and fill the world with justice, destroying the power of the wicked and waging the wars of God. For the entire purpose of appointing a king is to execute justice and wage wars as I Samuel 8:20 states: ‘Our king shall judge us, go out before us, and wage our wars.'”

In the last chapter of his laws of kings, dealing with King Messiah, Maimonides cites the Amora Shmuel’s original idea:

“Our Sages taught: ‘There will be no difference between the current age and the Messianic era except the emancipation from our subjugation to the gentile kingdoms.'”

I’m skipping a few paragraphs where Maimonides elaborates over the process of introducing the Mashiach, straight to his definition of Mashiach’s role:

“The Sages and the prophets did not yearn for the Messianic era in order to have dominion over the entire world, to rule over the gentiles, to be exalted by the nations, or to eat, drink, and celebrate. Rather, they desired to be free to involve themselves in Torah and wisdom without any pressures or disturbances, so that they would merit the world to come, as explained in Hilchot Teshuvah (Laws of Repentance).

“In that era, there will be neither famine or war, envy or competition for good will flow in abundance and all the delights will be freely available as dust. The occupation of the entire world will be solely to know God.

“Therefore, the Jews will be great sages and know the hidden matters, grasping the knowledge of their Creator according to the full extent of human potential, as Isaiah 11:9 states: ‘The world will be filled with the knowledge of God as the waters cover the ocean bed.'”

What emerges from the above analysis, which is by no means original, is the absence of anything mystical in our halachic understanding of messianic redemption. Essentially, we need to choose a king and he needs to declare his loyalty to the Torah and be prepared to defend Torah values both within and without the Land of Israel.

I would argue that the title “king” does not necessarily connote Royalty, but rather suggests “chief executive,” or, in Israeli constitutional terms, “Prime Minister.” And we’ve already chosen a prime minister. We’ve done so many times, for over close to 70 years.

All that chief executive must do, in order to qualify as King Messiah based on a minimalist application of Maimonides, is to embrace the Torah as Israel’s constitutional document, and to commit to applying Torah law—preferably through a prolonged, well thought out legislative process.

Nothing else needs to change in order for our redemption to be complete.

Arguably, the very process of challenging the Jews in Israel to seek out ways of applying the Torah to the legal needs of a modern democracy would most likely evoke those “Wars of God” Maimonides describes. But there’s no doubt that Maimonides’ view of at least the initial scope of the Jewish messianic rule is both activist and minimalist.

Frankly, it would be wonderful to watch how each segment of the Jewish nation, from the ultra-Haredim to the most remote leftists is challenged by the messianic call of a mere mortal named Benjamin Netanyahu.

Of course, all of this must first be approved by Sara.

The MOSCHIACH doesn’t do Land Swaps. Israel is from the Nile River to the Euphrates River. It’s not in Pieces, or given to Amelek.

  5. Yori Mendel says:

I dare call Jesus, not G-D a Liar. Jesus was the cursed line of Jeconiah (Coniah) as it plainly states in the Apocryphal Book of Matthew twice. He Is forever cursed, like Korach.

  6. Anonymous says:

Yori, are you suggesting that we throw away the concept of a separation of powers democracy where the government periodically comes up for election and go back to a system involving kings? Or are you advocating a figurehead king and a democratically elected government holding the real power?

  7. Moishe Pupik says:

I don't think Yori is suggesting anything more than he wrote, which is that according to his understanding of Maimonides, Netanyahu could become the messiah if he accepted the Torah as Israel's constitutional foundation. Anything else would be up to the citizens of Israel.

  8. Thanks for writing this thought provoking piece.

  9. He knows better than that.

  10. um, and Beit Mikdash also, gog magog end of days, many issues u r forgetting, now is too much tzionut and propaganda for israeliness

  12. Yori Mendel says:

Yes Really. It’s in Jeremiah. Of course many Christians seldom read completing those Prophetc Books to their end. It’s Always the pick and choose Juggling Act of Scripture which most Christians do, rather than ‘reading the Chapter before in it’s completion, . Then the Chapter, and then the following Chapter as well to get the True Reason and Results. Seldom do Christians do this. Jesus was, either the son of G-D, or the son of Joseph, . Not both. To say he was of G-D, he lied. If he was the son of Joseph’s agreements to keep the Adulterous Mary from being stoned to death, then it proves Jesus was a Mamzer ( a bastard). Either way, Jesus couldn’t be the Moschiach of G-D. Both show the Lies. His being played to Jeconiah (Coniah) as a genealogical heir of Jeconiah flatly G-D Himself says he and Jeconiah was cursed forever. That too says he wasn’t the Moschiach of King David through King Solomon. He wasn’t. His genealogy in Matthew twice puts him Cursed. Also, the fact that Judas voted in th Book of Acts, first few Chapters, AFTER HIS (Judas’s) Death, being cast by Judas himself with the full Twelve Apostles there, including him, it shows that the New Testament is a Fraudulent Work. He was casting a vote to vote for his death replacement, while he was still very much alive. Forget Resurrection. That comes at the End of Time. Your NT is a Fraud. So is your Jesus.

  13. Indeed. Gog, Magog, meshul anf Tubal of Ezekiel Chapter 38 are towns in Turkey. Turkey, Iran, Egpt and Ethiopia are in league. The Christians nevertheless are off the mark.

MY JOURNAL ; for years I have maintained that the human race is one despite all its different “races”, cultures… And I have studied biology, genetics… (see some results below) as well as languages. We are all descended from a common ancestor in Africa and all languages are descended from a common one, one that is formed on the basic understanding that the sexes are not “equal”. Below is some more information about languages, archeology, history… Human beings are thought to have originated 200,000 to 400,000 years ago.
It is thought that there were originally 19 language families from 50,000 to 10,000 years ago (in humans, the Fox P2 gene is mostly responsible for language) :
In America, we have Eskimo-Aleut-Inuit, Na-Dene (Navajo, Apache) and Amerind (Aztec, Cherokee)
    In Africa, we have Afro-Asiatic (Hebrew, Arabic), Niger-Kordofanian (Swahili…), Nilo-Saharan (Nubian…), Khosian (Nama…)
In Europe, west of the Black Sea, we have Uralic-Yukagir (Hungarian, Finnish…), Indo-Hittite, Caucasian
In eastern Russia…, we have Altaic (Mongolian, Turkish…) and Chukchi-Kamchatkan
In southern India…, we have Dravidian-Tamil
In China, we have Sino-Tibetan (Mandarin…) and Miao-Yao
In southeast Asia, we have Austro-Asiatic (Vietnamese…) and Daic-Thai

Irish are joining British Army in record numbers. Economic crisis leads to huge increase in recruits
More Irish people than ever before are joining the British Army because of hard economic times.
Recruitment from Northern Ireland in 2006 featured 4 per cent of applicants with addresses in the Republic. That figure grew to 16 per cent by 2008 and is now estimated at close to 40 per cent from the Republic .
Applicants who fail to land jobs with the Irish Army are turning to the Queen’s regiments when they fail to land a place with the armed forces at home.
The Irish Independent reports that the Irish Army, Navy and Air Corps received 79 applications for every officer cadetship available in the past 12 months.
Many who were turned down have applied to the British army instead.
That startling statistic is believed to be part of the reason why record numbers of Irish people are applying to join the British Army with applicant levels up by 10 per cent every year for the last six years.
“The numbers applying for positions in the Defence Forces has soared in the past two years, with 1,000 applications received in one week alone last year.” a spokesman said
One British army source told the Independent newspaper that: “Recruits from the Republic are especially prized because most boast a decent education and all want to make the military their career. (THE IRISH HAVE FORMED LARGE AND VERY CAPABLE PARTS OF THE BRITISH ARMY FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS – ALL OVER THE WORLD ; ONE REASON WHY CELTIC GENES ARE SPREAD SO WIDELY)
“It is no surprise that a significant number of non-commissioned officers are from Ireland.”
Bad romance: 10 surprising facts about the Irish and sex
What is it about the Irish and sex? Pre-Christian Irish attitudes to sex were decidedly more liberal than in recent times, where Cupid was saddled with a chastity belt by an outwardly pious nation. But have times changed? You be the judge. Here are 10 surprising facts about the Irish and sex:
Ancient Irish laws, called the Brehon Laws, provided women full equality with men. That’s right, they could inherit property or bequeath their own; they could marry or divorce the man of their choosing; even the right of a woman to experience satisfaction in marriage was enshrined in its legal framework. In Europe, where burning uppity women at the stake became a national pastime, the Irish attitude to sexual equality between the sexes was nothing short of revolutionary. Stamping out of the Brehon Laws, and with them the rights of women, was finally accomplished under Queen Elizabeth of England.

  19. Run Guo says:

Zechariah 10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. The reason Jewish people weeping when their messiah comes, is because they have despised rejected, and hated, crucified him. Otherwise Jewish people will be burst in to joy, dancing and exhausted themselves in happiness. Matthew 12 32 Jesussaid And whosoever speaketh a word against (him) the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.

  20. The last messiah the Jews chose was Napoleon Bonaparte. How many more shall they choose ?

  21. Gary Harper says:

If I might, I present this goy’s perspective.
Hashem pitched his tent in Israel’s midst. If friend, bride, husband, or father are not acceptable to a people, the next rung further down the ladder is king. Hashem told Israel that they can have a king, but taxation, loss of their lands, loss of their produce, and loss of their sons and daughters to the king will result. Their cup will grow bitter with time. Israel looks to the glory days of David and Solomon. But Israel discounts all of the later kings. What did most of them gain for you? Peace? Security? Plenty?
In the time before kings, every man who accepted Hashem into his heart was a king; and wherever he pitched his tent, was his kingdom. As Hashem camped within Israel’s midst if his tent, all of Israel were to invite Hashem to dwell in their tents.
Jacob laid his head upon the altar rock, and Hashem entered into the place prepared for Him in Jacob’s mind, and thereafter dwelt within him. Many were Jacob’s children. All had, and have, the potential to house Hashem within their hearts. This is the actual, promised sanctuary. Hashem within yields peace without.
To appoint a king is to live for things of this world. All such kingdoms ultimately fail. When every child of Israel sets up a dwelling place for Hashem in their hearts, then the kingdom will come. This is a promis also made to the goyim, as whoever opens up their hearts to Hashem, whether they have ever studied Torah or not, is found by Him to be an acceptable dwelling place. Such ones are always within Hashem’s sanctuary.
Hashem chooses Mashiach. Men do not. If someone is Mashiach, it will become obvious to all, with no one having to tell another. Mashiach works in such a way that the machinations of states and nations do not affect the ones who accept Hashem into their hearts. They are already within the kingdom. It is only when all invite Hashem to dwell within that the promised peace will come.
This does not mean that one is not to prepare to ward off invaders. There is to be a sword in every tent. But in the end time, no one will have any use for them. Hashem will inhabit all hearts, and will fill the earth.
I see no contradiction in this with Torah. I only mean to inform you that in my humble goy opinion, the kingdom will not be gained by setting up rulers above you. Each and every one of you is a king, under the protection of Hashem’s wings. If you choose to walk that path. It is the smoothest one.
